Even at his prime, Hiruzen is not a match for Hashirama. The only person who's a threat to the first is Madara and Madara is folding the rest of the kages

So the conflict and battle with Obito lasted a lot longer for us viewers. so it the amount of time we spent with this conflict up until now did not feel easy at all. And like Michelle has been saying, there have been hints of Obito's being able to change, whether he actually changes or not, its always been an option.

We never see Obitos parents but it's easy to assume they likely died in war because he lives with his grandmother. He then oh Narutos age was forced to watch his friend murder the girl he loves and he just simply broke. Might seem trivial in retrospect but in that moment, that's the kids entire life just up in flames. Also don't wanna get too deep into it because it's just a show, but just because someone else had it worse, doesn't mean that Obito's emotional position isn't valid, ya know? His actions are inexcusable yes but that's because, imo, he's murdered innocent people. Namely, it's said in the novels that Obito murdered all the non combatant Uchiha, while Itachi took care of the fighting age ones. So Obito had the blood of those women, children and the elderly on his hands. Can a character like that really be redeemed?

The last time I felt this was when he first learned Wind Style Rasenshuriken, and then when he became able to use it without damaging himself by going Sage Mode (Not to mention other Sage Mode improvements like the massive rasengan). Now, he's able to make Rasengan's so easily, and even from the tails of the nine tails. Imagine, the guy who needed a clone to handle different parts of the rasengan process and then needed more clones when he tried to add wind style to it to make the rasenshuriken (although, it's also why he was the first to succeed in adding a chakra nature to it ever since his dad created the jutsu and even his dad didn't manage to do that), and him now xD.

He might not have as traumatic of a story as Gaara or Sasuke, but he was still an orphan and lost the first person who ever showed him love. You also gotta remember that many of the characters with tragic backstories that we've been introduced to have fallen down the same path as Obito, so this isn't anything surprising for the Naruto universe (Sasori became an orphan during wartime and joined the akatsuki, Sasuke was groomed and manipulated by both Orochimaru and Obito and would've destroyed the leaf village if it weren't for Itachi's revival, Gaara was evil until he fought Naruto, Nagato lost his family/friends and was manipulated by Obito, etc.). If it weren't for Madara, Obito would've returned home after he survived, but instead he was held hostage until the point of Rin's death. Madara manipulated him with the idea of creating a world where nobody would feel pain or have to live in the Shinobi cycle that he had endured and watched other's endure (Kakashi's dad committing suicide after saving his friends, Rin being kidnapped twice and dying, the Shinobi world wars, etc.). I don't think it's surprising that Obito's ideals would be swayed after being manipulated and having both his family and the one person who loved him killed. Granted, none of this excuses his actions and he should 100% still be held accountable, but I think it's okay to recognize the tragedy in Obito's character and the downfall of his ideals.

He was a prodigy and was in a squad with the 2 other elders of the village. He was appointed hokage by Tobirama during that mission with Danzo. his biggest tribulation was having to deal with Orochimaru and his human experiments with leaf shinobi. He retired early but because the 4th died he had to become hokage once again and thus was too old and weak to defend the village when Orochimaru attacked.
