Whitebeard and Roger were rival captains of their own respective crews, so that's how Shanks would have met Whitebeard, it's also why Whitebeard is so much older.

Shanks and Buggy both was on roger’s crew and Shanks knows white beard treats his crew like family and obviously had his battle with blackbeard and knowing what blackbeard did to him he knows it will be lots worse for ace so he’s going to white beard to stop ace from going after blackbeard. I don’t want to say to much to spoil but i hope that clears up the confusion

And in the context of Shanks seeing Whitebeard is Shanks proposing to hunt Blackbeard himself coz of the Scar Blackbeard gave him,Shanks didnt want Ace to take the risk since Blackbeard can even gave permanent scar on him,let alone Ace (was not power level as Shanks).Shanks knows how much Whitebeard loves his crew (since all his Nakama considered his 'child' ,to hunt him he needs permission from him out of respect and to avoid more quarrel (than they already have). As Shanks predicted Whitebeard will not allow other pirates to mess with his crew issue as he mention as foolish of what Blackbeard did,he still his son so only him will deliver the punishments. Oh one more thing , Ace feel responsible to hunt Blackbeard coz he is together in the 2nd division as subordinates.

Whitebeard knew of Shanks due to Roger Pirates and Whitebeard Pirates interactions. Whitebeard was impressed that an apprentice (Shanks) rose through the ranks to become a Emperor just like Whitebeard is today (Shanks is much younger than Whitebeard). I think given the misunderstandings a rewatch of that scene would be helpful!

It looks like you guys have a little trouble keeping up with all the background lore, characters and stuff so I think this would really up your experience. I’ve noticed in the last reaction and a couple in the past that you tend to miss certain things so it would really help for stuff like that as well. I know it can be hard to keep up with everything but tbh I do believe it’s partly due to the fact that you guys are just doing way too many shows all at once, it can break the immersion of the story since you guys are trying to follow 8 other shows all at the same time.. it’s just a little friendly critique, I hope you guys don’t get burnt out from too much anime 😅. You guys have a long and great journey ahead for One piece so just wanted to give you guys a recommendation.

Hence why the community would be super helpful providing notes, and helpful materials instead of irritation. With that being said I understand the confusion. Roger and WB were rivals during their era. WB has outlived nearly all his peers, while recognizing here that Shanks was part of the era after WB, and now Luffy along with BB, and others are part of the new, current era. Honestly I would highly recommend keeping notebooks for your more in depth and long running series. One Piece especially benefits from this approach, because you will constantly refer back to it and make new discoveries, find insights and details large and small that all come together like puzzle pieces. That's the world and story that Oda has created, and as a writer I couldn't be more jealous.
