If something happends to side characters in the story it dosent mean main character is responsible for what happened to them it's a way to expand the story of the world they in and not just the story of the main character.

And also when it comes to jin ho’s dad if u remember in the first season he also said he doesn’t have any magic so him getting sick i feel like wouldn’t really be that uncommon
