You both have the right idea about the whole soul thing but I think Ron was closer to the actual answer which is that when a soul reaper defeats a soul (Hollow or Spirit) it moves to Soul Society to continue the cycle, but when a Quincy defeats a soul it is basically eradicated from the cycle and no longer exist.

Menos also means 'minus ', remember that wholes or normal souls are called pluses, and hollows can be referred to as minuses. I think one of Rukia's drawings even use + & - symbols. So in universe it's more like Big Minus.

Basically, to maintain the balance between the Soul Society and the Human World, Soul Reapers purify both souls and Hollows in the Human World, allowing the souls to eventually reincarnate back into the Human World. Quincies destroy the hollows completely hence destroying the balance. Quincy is like a bloodline, and Michelle is correct about the grandfather, whom the Soul Reapers believed to be the last 'known' Quincy.

Lol Also, just being picky here, but the translation misspelled the Menos Grande attack.... It got spelled "Sero" (correct pronunciation) but it should be spelled "Cero" which is the Spanish word for "zero"
