However, if Mustang had gone through with killing Envy out of revenge, he would have broken the promise he made to himself and to the people he vowed to protect—his loved ones and his country. Giving in to that urge for vengeance could have sent him spiraling into darkness, never finding satisfaction, even after Envy’s death. Mustang and Hawkeye made a pact: if he ever strayed from the right path, Hawkeye would be the one to take the shot.

Shout out to Ron prediction about Envy pretending to be Mustang cuz my first time watching I thought it was Hawkeye. Ron always cooking. But I love this rage moment from Mustang even his eyes are different, he almost got his revenge just for Envy to kill himself. I get Hawkeye and Ed didn’t want him to completely lose himself and become a monster lol

They are like animals just following their instincts. So, you can't really hate any of them, rather just feel pity for them. The true villain here is their father, the Dwarf in the Flask.
