Kaguya-sama: Love Is War – The First Kiss That Never Ends - Part 2

Comments

i love an arc that gets better the next time you see/read it!!! really shows the depth of the author as well

Honestly, I was getting there in terms of feeling frustrated with the ice kaguya arc until I read this comment. This is a necessary arc, one they need to overcome to really get there in terms of starting a relationship. is what I realized now :p Thanks for the comment!

My therapist told me all of us are made up of lots of parts that when put together make the whole of us. And some parts we don't like about ourselves we put away when in reality it's just another part of us. And sometimes those parts need love as well. You can interpret this as seeing Kaguya's ice personality as the cold and unlikable side of herself the one that pushes ppl away. But this part of her also needs love, she even says so herself that she loves Miyuki as much as the other Kaguyas do (the other Kaguyas you see in the courtroom scenes). It's frustrating but this is just a depiction of how sometimes we have parts of us that makes connection hard. Just my opinion. I know a lot of people don't like this arc, and tbh when I first read it I had the same thought, but my appreciation for it is way higher now in hindsight.

"i'm cold" "well damn shinomiya i can't control the weather" - Shirogane

Aleister Crowley

To see this as character regression is crazy, and if you don't like the drama then did you even like the season 3 finale because this is an extension of that. Miyuki and Kaguya can't be in a relationship if he can't come to an understanding with this part of her. She said in the finale that she hates this part of herself so Miyuki has to make this part of her feel good enough and that's what part of the movie is about

This is a great explanation I completely agree, this movie is all about self acceptance and how that factors into being in a relationship with someone else, before they can accept each other they must be brave enough to truly love and accept themselves. Viewing the movie from this lens makes it all make sense

Ryan

a big question that's not explored yet is why is it so hard for shirogane to just "man up". which is hopefully explored in the rest of the movie *cough cough*. also kaguya's "all i want is an ordinary romance" is so REAL!!! like dude you dont have to always do this clever tactic/plan and go all out to show me how you feel. just give me a kiss in front of the fucking 7-11 lmao, just hold my hand!! it's jarring bc the kaguya weve seen is so roundabout, but this kaguya is so straightforward that everyone thinks she's mean even when she's trying not to be. i really feel for her clearly lol

also ron, it's not "awaken the real you" (by this he means the kaguya we've seen in s1-s3). the kaguya we see from s1-s3 is actually not the truly 100% real her. she has to learn to embrace all aspects of her and truly believe every side of her is still loved vs shoving part of her away to never to seen/expressed. she was wearing a mask out of fear, hating the part of herself that is a consequence of her upbringing. the real you embraces the good and the bad, and finds out how to be whole. this is so common with so many relationships, ppl can be in love and still be hiding some part of themselves out of fear of abandonment.

i feel for kaguya here, despite how mean she seems. as i said to mojito above, they literally explain she has hidden a side of her that she wants to know is worth loving too. it's basically showing us that the kaguya we see from s1-s3 is an amalgamation of her personas that she feels comfortable expressing, both from her heartfelt moments with the student council and bc she hates that side of herself the more she's around shirogane (explained in the s3 finale). This movie explores the question - "what masks do we wear in front of others? how much of our need to better ourselves ends up being a way to mask insecurities? how do you balance embracing/loving every side of someone, even the parts that are hard to love vs improving yourself to be someone who is easier to love and be around". it's so deep and still manages to balance some laughs. ppl who get frustrated at kaguya are missing out if they dont also understand how important it is for the part of her that first noticed shirogane is also someone who is loved back by him, even if that side of her is way more bitchy that the side she always shows him. we contain multitudes, and we shouldnt try to shove parts of ourselves away out of fear of not appealing to others, especially our romantic partners. it boils down to "will you also love me when you see the sorta bitchy side i harbor, the side i was too afraid to ever be when im around you bc i like you"

Jay rellim

and shirogane is so used to the kaguya that she's expressed over these years that he's ofc bewildered and confused, it's whiplash from his POV. i actually love this movie bc it's the truest test of their relationship.

it's not character regression. they literally explain she has hidden a side of her that she wants to know is worth loving too. it's basically showing us that the kaguya we see from s1-s3 is an amalgamation of her personas that she feels comfortable expressing, both from her heartfelt moments with the student council and bc she hates that side of herself the more she's around shirogane (explained in the s3 finale) lol... imo you just dont get the movie. it's literally "will you also love me when you see the sorta bitchy side i harbor, the side i was too afraid to ever be when im around you bc i like you"

I'm really disappointed with this movie so far. Despite referencing events from later it feels like it was made for people who only watched Season 1 given how the characters behave. So much character regression, and most disappointing of all, it feels like the story has gone from 70% comedy and 30% drama to 10% comedy and 90% drama. It's like they needed a conflict for the plot to make the movie, and went about in the absolute worst way possible. This isn't the show I love.

Mojito

Haha ya it does get frustrating to watch them since they were right at the finishing line already! >.<

let's go kaguya
