2025-05-04 18:29:42 +0000 UTCIt's still all vibrations for cassette tapes, cds, and the like but what those vibrations are being turned into is the question. With CDs, it's the same as records but the grooves are microscopic and read by lasers. With cassette tapes, it's magnetic particles on magnetic tape! Think about it, if you scratched a CD, it would skip on that exact spot every time. If you crinkle the tape in a cassette, it sounds distorted. We don't have THOSE kinds of issues any more with digital media.

Then during playback, the playback head receives the magnetic signals and transfers that into an electric impulse, then to the speakers. Pretty crazy.
