At the time, struggling families would be sending their daughters to work as maids so that they could have one less mouth to feed and also get partial payments from their daughters' salaries. You could also have shady individuals kidnapping girls to sell them. But kidnapping was illegal, so Maomao's kidnappers pretended to be her family in order to profit from her sale (hence why they receive part of her pay) and avoid being caught for kidnapping. The connection of Maomao to Fengming is through her kidnappers.

The Palace is unaware that MaoMao was actually kidnapped by people who pretended to be said family and then sold her to the Palace. This information later became known only to Jinshi and those in the Jade Pavilion (Concubine Gyokuyou and her ladies-in-waiting), as MaoMao had spoken about it previously. Also, keep in mind that MaoMao's understanding of the baby swap situation is based purely on her own speculation and deductive reasoning. Quick recap: - The Empress Dowager’s son (the current Emperor’s younger brother) and Concubine Ah Duo’s son (the Emperor’s son) were born around the same time and day. - Both boys would be 17 years old now. - Ah Duo’s son later died under unknown circumstances, likely due to honey poisoning(only FengMing knew the cause). - MaoMao speculates there may have been a baby swap. She believes Ah Duo wouldn’t have remained in the Palace solely for the sake of retaining her concubine title—her personality suggests she stayed for her son’s sake(if a baby swap did happen). - We saw Jinshi sharing a drink with Ah Duo. He mentioned that person left, returned, and then kicked him out. Later, while drunk, he hugged MaoMao with tears in his eyes. Honey made from poisonous flowers is generally safe for adults, as it contains little to no toxin. However, it can be lethal for infants/babies. The plot of The Apothecary Diaries is actually brilliant. Every answered question leads to more mysteries, keeping your mind constantly thinking.
