2025-06-27 03:00:46 +0000 UTCI think that was a subtitle issue.. it wasn’t 10 years ago. It was 19 years ago. The show is definitely eluding to Jinshi either being the current emperor’s brother or son. Personally I think he is the son because he looks waaaaay too much like Concubine Ah Duo. Which means he would be next in line to run the Empire. Also one good thing to note with this show is to pay attention to what MaoMao questions. I’ve noticed a lot of times in this show MaoMao will bring up something that is slightly suspicious and it gets derailed by some other shiny plot point. The shiny thing seems important but it’s always there to hide subtle clues that MaoMao leaves. It also might be helpful to put together some type of family tree so you can keep track of what’s known and other possible scenarios.

2025-06-27 01:59:32 +0000 UTCMaomao is hilarious 😂 Jinshi is so complex as a character but we getting somewheree For the question ‘who’ and ‘why’ about Jinshi, ‘who’ it’s there kind of😅 but ‘why’ there’s a part where he mentioned the emperor needs to birth a boy, and hence the care towards the concubines (is what I think just from this ep) fyi, this show really likes throwing viewers everywhere and won’t touch on things like episodesss later😂 but it’ll click when it does (typical mystery/detective shows)

The main thing to keep in mind is that Maomao and Jinshi are unreliable narrators in the sense that we, the audience, may know more and/or be willing to make certain conjectures that the characters are not willing to make (either based on the information provided to us thus far or based on information that they know but have not shared with us yet)... especially Maomao because she is someone with a very definite sense of "know your place" and "stay away from problematic rabbit holes unless you absolutely cannot." 😸

However, at present, only the emperor’s younger brother is officially recognized, as the emperor’s son with Concubine Ah Duo is presumed to have died. This episode further supports that theory revealing that Jinshi is actually 19 years old, is deliberately suppressing his manhood, and is pretending to be "Jinshi," a 24-year-old eunuch. We still don’t know why he is hiding his identity, pretending to be a eunuch and managing the Rear Palace for the emperor. We also hear Jinshi’s inner thoughts, where he wishes the emperor would hurry and produce an heir. As for the assassination attempt, regardless of whether Jinshi is the emperor's secretly swapped son or his younger brother, he remains the next in line for the throne, since the current emperor still has no heir. Killing Jinshi means one less person for a concubine's son to compete with for the throne. Just to be clear, all this information about Jinshi is known only to us, the viewers. Perhaps those involved in the swap are aware as well, but at this point, MaoMao either doesn't know or keeps dismissing the idea to avoid getting into trouble.
