There's a great little piece of information when Lakan is first talking to Jinshi about his interactions with the courtesan who we later come to find is Fengxian. He says "While I could beat her at chess she would always beat me at Go". So when she lets him pick the game for their bet, he knows he can't beat her, so he's basically saying "I will give you whatever you want" without actually saying it.

2025-07-10 15:50:10 +0000 UTCI think Lakan would’ve considered choosing to play Chess (his specialty) as forcing himself on her because of the bet that they made. Which is what he means by “A terrible thought crossed my mind.” But when he chooses to play Go (Fengxian’s specialty) he’s basically saying she can have whatever she wants, which ends up being them conceiving MaoMao. And I think he feels so guilty about the whole situation that he paints himself as the villain when talking about it.

The traditional rules may differ a little than how koreans play it. The one with black and white pieces is called 바둑 in korean and Go in english

2025-07-09 13:44:29 +0000 UTCI think Michelle would love the light novel so much, try to read vol. 1-2 after watching season 1, youll get deeper into season 1 episodes 🌚 season 2 is up to vol. 4. also, the artwork is so pretty too! i also love the manga adaptation but the artwork in original light novel is sooo good. not to mention the novel includes so many details.

The game that MaoMao and Lakan played is called Chinese Chess. In contrast, the game Shikamaru plays is called Shogi, a different Japanese strategy board game. FengXian, MaoMao’s mother, excels at the game of Go(a different Chinese strategy board game), while Lakan is skilled in Chinese Chess. On the night of their bet, Lakan still chose to play Go which was FengXian’s specialty after knowing the terms of the bet and she ended up winning the match. Because of the terms of the bet, she was allowed to "take anything she wanted," and she chose to offer herself to him. Regarding the severed little finger, it was explained as a form of cursing someone. Two fingers were found in the pouch, one belonging to an adult, the other to a baby or child. As you saw, Lakan blamed himself for not realizing she was pregnant and ended up villainizing himself for all that she went through. Great job catching so many details in this episode! 🧐👍🏻 Can't clarify on the other stuff since it will be revealed sooner or later.😊

It stays inside a certain space and moves only diagonally, showing its role as the first and closest protector of the General(King), like a royal guard for the King. It is definitely a higher position piece than Bishop piece.

Lankan speaks that way about the situation because he hates himself for not realizing the situation, in his eyes it was such a horrible oversight it may as well have been intentional, at least thats my take
