Apothecary Diaries - Episode 24

I felt that the old lady treated her courtesans the girls like her own daughters. She was just as furious with Lakan as the others were when he disappeared for three years, and everyone believed he had run away. During that time, FengXian became pregnant, lost her status as a high courtesan, gave birth to MaoMao, and was forced to serve male clients like any other courtesan. In the process, she contracted syphilis, losing not just her pride. Even if the truth about Lakan’s absence came to light later, it was too late. The damage had already been done, and there was no going back. Out of pride, FengXian may have chosen to remain hidden, and the old lady likely supported that, both to protect her and because she blamed Lakan for what had happened. MeiMei even cried, saying that if FengXian had been more honest from the very start, things might have turned out differently. And when Lakan finally saw FengXian again, still seeing her as beautiful, unchanged in his eyes despite everything, my heart just broke. His tenderness and loyalty moved me to tears.

2025-07-11 17:36:29 +0000 UTCThat moment when we see that Lakan doesn't perceive that Fengxian's beauty has withered at all is so beautiful. This show does such a good job of helping you understand both sides of a story (eventually) and how peoples behavior does not always make them out to be what they seem. Now that you've seen S1's finale I'll voice my personal opinions: The owner of the Verdigri House (aka the Gran) is, in the end, the one to blame here for this whole situation getting to where it did. Lakan wanted to reunite with her - even 3 years later. Fengxian wanted to reunite with him well before that... so much so that she sent him letters relentlessly and eventually even her and her own childs finger to try to "convince" him to return. Sad that he didn't receive those letters. If gran-gran hadn't pushed him away the moment he returned and refused to tell anyone else about Fengxian being hid back there then this would have all worked out *better*. As for why others didn't leak it, my personal understanding of the situation is that the only people who knew 100% that Fengxian was hidden away back there were Gran-Gran, Meimei, and Maomao. I don't think Loumen knew (though because his detective qualities that he passed on to Maomao, likely suspects). We also know that even if he did "figure it out", he firmly believes in "Not speaking on conjecture"... so he wouldn't have ever told Lakan without knowing for sure. Not to mention we have no idea what Lakan and Loumen's relationship is in the modern day. I do suspect that the other of the "Three Princesses" knew about Fengxian as well since they all seem to have adopted Maomao as their "little sister". That said, Meimei is the only one confirmed to know both by being shown tending to her and also talking to Maomao about visiting her.

2025-07-11 10:09:17 +0000 UTCMeimei said, "Big Sis, why wasn't she being honest?" Fengxian had her pride as a courtesan; she never begged for Lakan's attention. She must have known that Lakan couldn't afford to buy her out, especially since he only visited her once every three months, and by then, her price had increased. In a desperate move, she attempted to get pregnant, believing that this would convince Lakan to purchase her by decreasing her price. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned because Lakan had to go overseas. It's such a tragic story... she should have been honest about her intentions from the beginning. But in the end, her pride led to her downfall. 😢

2025-07-11 08:30:38 +0000 UTCOne of the great parts about this show is that sure you can piece things together before they are revealed, but they do a good job of laying it all out eventually in case you miss something. Excited for yall to start season two!

2025-07-11 03:25:00 +0000 UTCThis isn't a spoiler in anyway since its not part of the canon, but the writer did elude to the fact that MaoMao's mother, Fengxian is the daughter of the Brothel Granny, which is why she wasn't thrown out.

2025-07-11 02:54:45 +0000 UTCI think the Old Lady kept things a secret to not ruin the reputation of the brothel. That’s the only thing that makes sense to me. You wouldn’t want rumors that a courtesan at your establishment has syphilis.
