But if any of the emperor’s concubines gives birth to a son, that boy will become the new heir. The concubine who gives birth to the first son will be made Empress. So, the families of each concubine wouldn’t want another to gain the upper hand by giving birth to a son first, which creates fierce competition behind the scenes. Palace drama isn’t as simple as just killing the emperor. His presence is necessary to keep the country stable and to prevent foreign powers from seeing weakness and making a move. Behind the scenes, people use politics and manipulation to gain power before making any move against the emperor. In many palace dramas and in real history, removing heirs or possible successors is often the first step.

2025-07-17 23:49:19 +0000 UTCi think the next in line would be the brother of the emperor if the emperor doesn’t have male heirs. so if the baby in the beginning wouldn’t of died he would of been the next heir to be the emperor and the concubine would of been the empress dowager (i think)
