Far in the distance, three colossal shapes tower over the desert horizon…
In this episode, we travel to the Nile Valley, and tell the story of one of the most iconic cultures ever produced by humankind – the civilizations of ancient Egypt. I want to show how this series of related cultures grew up in the floodplains of their great river, and built some of the most enduring and recognizable structures in the world. And I want to tell the story of what happened to bring the age of the Pharaohs finally and cataclysmically to an end.

Thank you to everyone for your patience in waiting for this episode. I really hoped to get it out before the end of last year, but as always there are unintended delays. Between a death in my wife's family and the coming of our first child, it has been quite a crazy year, but I'd like to thank everyone who's stuck with the show regardless. The new episode is available to play through Patreon above, and will come to all other public channels next week. The first time I ever listened I was laying on the couch in the sunshine, listening to the episode about the Sumerians, and I dozed off at some point. I awoke to the poem about Enkidu's dream of the afterlife. I was so struck by it, I went back and reslistened and haven't missed an episode since. Keep it up!

I'm just a factory worker, and a lot of nights I'm too tired and exhausted to read, but I cannot tell you how much joy it was to hear of the history of Carthage, and of the Rapa Nui. Obviously, very sad what they suffered, but joy in at least developing some knowledge of their fate. If we're to democratize knowledge, we have to be patrons to its teachers.

2024-01-20 15:09:02 +0000 UTCYessss thank you Paul, going to start now! If you see this, I’d had a question. Which is, have you ever considered having your episodes translated to other languages. I wouldn’t really know, but I’d *imagine* that’d be relatively easy compared to the massive work that must go into researching and writing and editing and etc. Seems like you’d just need a person who had enough expertise in English and whatever other language, plus good narration skills. I ask partly because I feel like your show could do well for speakers of other languages as well, given the universality of its scope. And, for my own interest, I’m learning Spanish and have listened to every episode of your show so many times, and I’d love if it was something I could put on in Spanish and work on my listening skills. Thank you so much for your work!
