I think the early fillers in this arc suffer in comparison to this latter half beginning with 357. There isn't as much character development as much as "This was the dark time in Kakashi's life, also Yamato was there and he became Kakashi's friend". Now we have background on moody anbu Kakashi, we can begin to explore how he might grow from there.

The idea that there's more to the promise Kakashi made to Obito is valid. But also I think that his response gives insight to something that many are familiar with. It could be argued that Kakashi's answer is just that part of an element to life that we all give when hammered down with guilt, we battle in a way that's hard to be honest with ourselves when it comes to reflecting on our promises that we feel we have failed to keep. Kakashi doesn't talk about that eye for a reason, because he does feel that he failed, along with visiting their graves, he is riddled with this guilt. Perhaps he can't outwardly confess to that yet. Giving any answer besides the one he gave would have prompted a deeper dialogue, one that both he and Itachi didn't have time for, and more importantly, that Kakashi wasn't ready to explore.

But for first time watcher there are fillers you need to see to get perspective and care deeply about upcoming events. To help with your understanding, kakashi said his friends words/taught him to never kill a friend even if it was a mission, which obito taught kakashi if you remember, it was a BIG part of their characters. THAT was what Kakashi said he would honour, not specifically about Rin. Also about Shisui, yes he committed suicide, and entrusted Itachi with his last eye as he knew he was being hunted, and to awaken itachi's mangekyo sharingan, which it showed Itachi awakening straight after Shisui's death.

Oh wow, like I said, I never watched these before and I'm getting some great context. The anime production team must have had some kind of outline from Kishimoto-sensei when these episodes went into production because that's definitely what I'm feeling from the dialogue and such. EDIT------ @DerozTY @Jisoo @Ahkenaton Furdge Omg, I did so much digging about this topic when I had downtime at work today. 😭 It's actually hard to find a definite answer about this. It seems like it's a possibility screenwriters (for anime in general) may ask the original mangaka if their scenario is okay for some filler that have connections to the plot (like a quick scan and thumbs up lol) but it doesn't necessarily mean the mangaka said "IT'S CANON". Just boring administrative tasks, lol. I even went on Japanese Wikipedia! At the very least, I found out the screenwriters for this arc in particular, worked on Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, Inu Yasha, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Shaman King, Black Jack...to name a few. I must admit, they had me gagged with Gundam Wing because that is my literal favorite anime.

To clear up confusion about Kinoe or Yamato He, like Sai was initially from the Foundation, not the Anbu. It’s Danzo’s personal Special Ops. In canon, Yamato was a given name much like Sai as a fake name. Kakashi often refers to him as Tenzo and Yamato tells Kakashi not to call him that. This being filler adds in a backstory to how Tenzo gets that name, but ultimately starts off as Kinoe

You don't always need to kill to unlock the mangekyo. This is in a novel, not the manga or anime but for example Shisui unlocked his mangekyo because him and his best friend at the time were on a mission and the enemy was catching up to them. His friend was lacking behind and shisui basically didn't slow down, allowing the enemy to catch up with his friend. Once he realized what happened, he unlocked his mangekyo because he felt at fault for his friends death.
