Y'all might want to get a filler guide if you guys don't already have one. Bleach was NOTORIOUS for introducing random filler even worse than Naruto did.

2020-08-13 16:38:03 +0000 UTCMayuri Kurotsuchi (backyard cooler the third, as you said) is indeed the successor to Kisuke Urahara as Squad 12 captain and head of the research/science division. Not a spoiler, he mentions he's the second head of the division during the fight. Also, Momo Hinamori and Toshiro Hitsugaya aren't related. They might have been "foster siblings" like we saw with Rukia and Renji when they were growing up on the streets, but I've always seen their relationship as more childhood friends.
