Seeing the earth dome prison jutsu reminded me of when we first seen Jirobo use it during the Sasuke retrieval arc trapping Naruto, Shikamaru and everybody else, nostalgia.

These arcs are always wonky, have no power scaling, and often times contradict the story so let's accept it for what it is and stop trying to sell it as some kind of Shakespearean, misunderstood masterpiece. It gets the job done of making time while the manga gets ahead and that's it.

For example War with Madara and Hashirama, Tobirama one reason they were so so strong is because they did not know peace (keyword “one”). One reason ppl get validly upset with how fast the new GEN is progressing because from everything we were told in Shippuden, it should be the opposite.

This is in line with the Cloud village too since they’re mostly known for stealing and advancing Ninjutsu and Ninjutsu weapons for military use ( like when they tried to steal the byakugan from baby Hinata to learn how it works, acquiring the most powerful ninja treasures, or building the chakra diffusion cannon to blow up the moon in the movie)

Remember in Shippuden he often looked down on younger generations like when he met Gaara as a kazekage and was surprised of his age, but still knows that they're important to the village. Also almost every time he was eager to do whatever by himself for the same reason, he just believed he could do everything better than anyone younger than him (which is almost everyone), he's just that kind of old man character. In this case he just wants to do anything to protect younger people. Even if this looks insane he has good intentions and it's totally "in character" but you'll probably get it better by the end of this arc anyway lol.
