Also, they didn't really explain the family situation well in the anime, but basically the kids were given blood transfusion from the mother at birth, which happens sometimes because usually the blood from mother to child has no issue's, except very specific situations. AIDS however can sometimes go undetected if you don't test specifically for it, which is what happened in this situation because the mother didn't know she had it. So both the parents had it, then the mother gave it to the kids.
