As I’m rewatching this after season 2 no. There was no choice to share the marbles. You had to take all 20 individual to win not as a team. Surprised Trey misheard the rules. There was no gimmick.

I think the old man might still be alive and might be running the whole thing or at least be a VIP or something. I find it odd this episode that the layout was from his old neighborhood and that they had a replica of his home. Another thing that caught my eye was back when they had the riot that night he climbed way up high, it seems the gamemaster stopped everything after seeing the old man. That's what I'm guessing right now
