He wanted him to become a demon because to Akaza, having to kill such a talented martial artist and somewhat of a prodigy was a waste....so you're totally right; he WAS begging him to be one. cuz even though they hated one another...Akaza actually acknowledged Rengoku and didn't want to cut this phenomenal martial artists life short.

Akaza is just a legend and wanted a homie on his skill level ( or someone who could potentially fight on his level with him). and despite what others say... Akaza was only scared of the sun, not Rengi' sadly.
