I'd have to double check, but I think in the book, it may have just been due to Quirrel touching Harry that caused his death. I don't think Harry actually did anything, and I think Voldemort's "spirit" coming out was just in the movies. Harry was aready passed out by that point in the book, so he wouldn't have seen what happened to that part of Voldemort after Quirrel died. And his mother's love protection works because it's a form of sacrificial protection magic. Voldemort gave Lily the option to be spared if she allowed Voldemort to kill her son, but as any loving mother would, she rejected his offer and was killed, which was what gave Harry the protection. It wasn't just her love for him on its own. It was Her choosing to sacrifice herself for him, even when she could've chosen to just save herself.
