Continuing Onsen Part 2

I finished all onsen main interior and exterior props and began texturing and making materials for the pieces.

The Japanese employ cedar for various wooden parts of their traditional buildings. They also use soft and delicate materials like cloth for fusuma. Fusuma are the sliding doors. They frequently paint landscapes on them:

One of the most laborious parts of the building was the roof. Especially the shingles. Shingles come in many different ways depending on the region and culture:

I stuck with a simple design so it can be easy to implement (karakusa). These types of shingles have a cylindrical front and are followed by flat versions of itself:

This was simple enough to recreate in Blender.

I put a bunch of them together in an array like fashion and dropped it into Substance Painter. I began with a nice concrete like base:

Then I added some wear. These shingles must look like they have seen hard days:

Lastly I added some moss to give it some natural wear pizzazz:

I did the same for the corner pieces.

These corner pieces are typically lifted because they are internally held up by wooden supports:

Then I started to put them all together:

It's coming along very well.

The building itself is complete and I am currently optimizing it for VR. The shingles have a lot of triangles that need to be simplified (~360k).

I will be baking the high poly mesh into a low poly version to alleviate this. However, I will also be implementing a sort of manual occlusion culling to avoid rendering the high detail version when it is impossible to see it even though the camera might be nearby. When the player is directly below the shingles, they will be disabled:

That's where I'm at right now. I should finish the onsen visuals hopefully by next devpost and begin implementing the logic the following devpost. I will be releasing another beta tomorrow (late Saturday) to fix some VR issues.

Stay tuned!

Really impressive stuff! The breakdown of your research and assembly process is very interesting to read, and very helpful to me personally as I'm getting into 3D work but often struggle on how to approach complex projects.

Thanks can’t wait
