What the hell happened to you, Monzel!?!
Added 2022-07-31 23:46:44 +0000 UTCHello all,
Thank you all that were worried about me and for those who have yelled at me in private DMs (I don't blame you one bit). I believe an explanation is due as to what the hell is going on.
Three months ago, I planned to release GLP5 in a couple of weeks. However, that was assuming there wouldn't be a massive change in management for my current job. And lads' let me tell you, it was pure hell. Honestly, I'm surprised if this is even legal what they did to me.
To save yourself some reading time, here is the summary: we got a new VP for my area, my old manager was 'let go' shortly afterwards, I went from working a healthy 80 hrs/biweekly to ~120/biweekly (and 140+ when on-call), began being taken advantage of, I had to get the fuck out so I prepared for technical interviews, got some offers but culture was the same shit (if not worse), accepted a new offer and here I am explaining to you.
For those of you who are interested, let me remind you, that I also came out of a car accident that totaled my car and hospitalized me. Also, I try to leave out some details to prevent you guys from recognizing me in real life (though, some of you already know from my mistakes, whoops), but hopefully, you understand this bullshit.
Now, let's get started with some context. I work at a company where nearly all companies depend on us (but they just don't know it). When I got the job offer from them, the initial pay rate was decent, but I was more in love with the fact I got into a company that makes my resume look great. I've worked there for about 3.6 years and I'm two levels below the VP chain of command (or whatever the fuck you call it). My job is on the technical side that also involves me being on-call. Not to brag, but I'm fucking good at my job compared to the people I've worked with.
Now, fast forward to mid-April, our company announced they got a new VP of X. He said he looks forward to "achieving the best out of us." Ok, "whatever", I thought. Biggest mistake of my life. Two weeks in, surprise performance reviews, I'm in the clear, but everyone else...😬. The next week, my manager got 'let go' apparently because they felt like he wasn't achieving our "full potential." Immediately got a new manager, then a new project, and from there, everything went to utter shit.
Unknowingly, the month May, was the sign for me to ask "may I get the fuck out with pay please?" I quickly found out how much our manager expected from us. He gave us unreasonable deadlines with things that have never been done before; things that should take 4-6 weeks were asked to do 1-2. Of course, we highly advised that they push back the dates or expect unfinished work and/or unexpected behavior. The response? "I guess you all don't seem fit for this job anymore." HR time!
Long story short, HR just listen to me and my coworkers complain. The result? Half of my team were let go. I also found out that this was happening across the company. Ok, I'm still here, and the company needs me for their shit to work. Manager threatened us that anyone who complained about the deadlines were deemed to be 'unfit'. Again, my prideful dumbass was like, "well shit, you aint gonna do shit to me." Wrong!
I had a 1:1 meeting with him and he said I wasn't contributing enough. My coworkers were working unpaid overtime while I was keeping the (was) strict 80/biweekly. He said it was "part of the job." I fired back, but he didn't listen. That was when I knew I needed to get the fuck out quick. Unfortunately, they didn't let that happen. They made me work on weekends for on-call (and occasionally off-call) and pinged me everytime to make sure I was proactively monitoring their shit and answering calls. I had to be proactive anyway because shit seemed to break more often after this management change ( I guess everyone is sleep-deprived).
To summarize the rest of the events, coworkers were being let go, got new ones, had to 'train' them, now everything is on me, the seniora. When I need questions answered noone knows because everyone is new and shit is undocumented and unorganized. 'Teammates' is a myth with this new management. They are too overloaded to be of any help, so it's really every man for themselves out here in the jungle.
With all of this, my field requires me to do multiple technical interviews, some are easier than others, but rest assured, it is difficult. Attempting to prepare for technical interviews plus an severely unbalanced work-life balance was very hard, and I ended up sleeping when I didn't want to. Also, I got more headaches and there were times I literally felt like my heart was going to stop.
But now, as of last Friday, all of that is (hopefully) over. I got a new job offer that pays much more than my old one with less responsibilities and a supposedly healthy work culture (according to reviews and statement). I say it's hopefully over, because it seems like we'll be hitting The Great Depression 2022-style soon. Fuck greedy American corps, always fucking shit up.
I will be updating everything soon, but I got to go pick up some shit.
