Sunday Update: IO Bodypillow Edition

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Art is rolling in for the next update. Things are ramping up quickly now. In just a few more months v0.3 will be upon us. That will mean actual sex and the waitress mini-game. So what happens between that? Filling in scenes. Adding more locations for scenes to happen and just adding more variety.

The next update will have the first game-over scene. It will also fill in some scenes like Catherine cuddling with the IO body pillow. I'll be adding masturbation spots for both upstairs and downstairs beds.

On the topic of variety I wanted to take a moment to highlight the game's artist Genno. I was about 6 months into dicking around in RPGMaker, coming up with the basics of the game while casually looking for an artist. At the time I was even considering learning some 3d anime waifu application and just calling it done. I was having a hard time finding an artist I liked.

I wanted a style that wasn't too realistic but wasn't too generic when I came across Genno's profile and immediately send him a message. I really liked what I saw and thought his drawing style was really well done. I can't say I have much of an eye for art outside of what I think looks sexy, but I can say I notice little details. He is always showing the scene from different unexpected angles. He doesn't rely on typical poses and just going with what's easy. He's done a lot of design work behind the scenes and fills in the gaps that I never even consider. For example Catherine's standing portrait has lighting in the bar that she doesn't have in the rest of the game. Most games would just reuse the same standing portrait picture. I sure would have. But the bar has this gooey purple-blue light that soaks those scenes and it was important to him it be represented. That's some good shit right there. His art makes this game what it is and I'm very thankful for it.

My biggest worry was now I would be relying on someone who isn't me to progress the game. I've had a long history of wanting to work with people to make games. Be it a table top game, a board game, or a video game, but no one was ever serious about the project and interest would wane in and out. Well Genno and I have been working together for a year now and he has never once failed to deliver.

It's rare I give advice here, but here it is anyway. If you're the classic "idea guy" who can't seem to motivate your friends to get on board a creative project:  Just go ahead on your own. Eventually like minded people will seek you out once they see you actually doing it. Also you might just end up learning a little... ugh... Javascript along the way.

As a general rule of gamedev thumb, non-technical types don't like to jump through hoops to get their work in-game. Make it a simple tool, or just a temp file they replace and BAM. So much work gets added to the project. The other half is paying people for work keeps them motivated.
