Sunday Update reviewing stuff edition
Added 2023-07-03 06:56:39 +0000 UTCSo as we get closer and closer to v0.3 I'm going to be putting my focus on two things. First, making the waitress mini game. Second, prepping the current pacing and story to all align with where I want it to be. I see v0.3 as a major milestone and I want that section of the game to be pretty solidified. This means building all the filler scenes, fleshing out more upgrades, and fixing things I'm currently unhappy with. On that note just because we are on v0.2.7 doesn't mean that v0.3 will be 3 updates away. If I find extra stuff that needs to be added to flesh out the intro then I'll gladly do a v0.2.9.1 or whatever. That isn't me going into the endless cycle of 2.9.9.9.1 updating. It's just that not everything will perfectly align with the current schedule. Same goes for v0.3 to v0.6 I might skip from .4 and go straight to .5 if I feel the current development reflects that.
The thing I need to hammer out the most is the brewing system. I'm thinking of making it a very brief mini game something like, "Align the sync ratio," kind of deal and be done with it. That whole system needs something to make it a bit more intuitive and "inside" the game. I don't want people to have to refer to outside notes to be able to play. At its core this is an adult game and, in my opinion, the systems should be light and simple so the story and the art can play center stage. I don't want to take people out of the would so they can research the brewing materials for dark beer.
Lastly, I put way too much thought into keeping the save files usable between updates. I even have a brief updater that runs on existing saves to try to avoid conflicts. This also slows down development. So... I'm not going to think about existing saves as much. I'll keep providing save files to bring people up to date, and I'll generally avoid breaking saves unless I need to, but be ready for saves to get broke.

I like the idea of disregarding save compatibility and just including a save that starts at the start of the new content. The brewing system... to be honest, it feels a lot like busywork as it currently stands. I used it a few times and then just chickened the drinks from that point onward. Simplifying it is definitely a good call!
