Added 2025-11-14 18:24:45 +0000 UTCI'm glad all of you loved Ess' Halloween costume, and are probably sad to see her not in it in page two, but it wouldn't have been in Ess' personality to keep that on. She would have definitely slipped into something more comfortable.
And that statement that Ess' makes about it not being today or tomorrow is inspired by a line from the Ray Bradbury novel, "Something Wicked This Way Comes." The exact sentence, referencing the witching hours is:
“Three a.m. That’s the hour, yes, that’s the time. That’s when you’re alone, or nearly alone, and the world is full of shadows and noises you can’t explain. That’s the hour when the night has grown old, but the morning isn’t born yet. It’s no longer yesterday, not yet tomorrow.”
I really loved this sentiment that I read back in my wilder twenties, frequently staying out late at parties. And it's true, if you stay up till that late, how do yo measure the day? Is it still today, or is it tomorrow? If you met someone at a party, and they asked you what you did that day, would you say, "Well, YESTERDAY I did such and such,"
It's a really poetic sentiment that I thought would be perfect for this scene.
If you haven't read Bradbury beyond Fahrenheit 451, I highly suggest him. You can even start with his collections of short stories like The October People, or The Illustrated Man. They're great!

It's been AGES since I last read Fahrenheit 451 or even seen the movie. I might have to check out his stuff. My dad was an avid reader of Heinlein's novels in his youth. Heinlein's Beyond This Horizon even provides one of the best quotes ever: "An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life." Nice quote about 3 AM, a time when in college I drunkenly pissed on a few dumpsters. I don't do that anymore--stay out past 3 AM or publicly urinate on dumpsters. Great work on Ess and her new post-party guests who sound vaguely British.
