Thank you so much for your well thought out comment! I am so happy with the way this came out, too! I based the gun off a 1911 .45, and then gave it a wide, conical barrel and a shotgun pump on it for flair, then just gave it some lights, and presto! Space Gun!

The contour work on this piece is amazing! I absolutely love the emphasis you put on weight, volume, and texture. Every aspect of the character feels incredibly tangible and only feels more real the longer you look. The gun is also appropriately futuristic/fantastical while maintaining a grounded essence. Awesome work on this dude! My only wish is that I could get this book in a physical format (because I'm old-school like that) to have on my shelf.

Good eye! And indeed I did! 1. Rather than doing a pencil version, and then an ink version, I just did a tight pencil version, and that's what you're seeing here. It took some working to get it just right, but I was able to put in more detail than I normally would. See, when I do pencils, I always have this thing in the back of my head reminding me that I will have to, essentially, draw it again. By eliminating this step and time sink, I was able to put more energy into the drawing. That is the most obvious change, but there are more. 2. I did NOT draw an upper crease on her eye lid, rather I drew the outside lines and used shading and highlights to indicate the eye socket. I know this is a really small detail, but I think it had a really big effect on how her eyes look. 3. The illustration is 'Painted' instead of flat/cell shading, or even soft airbrush. I recently made the switch to Clip Studio, and I even more recently learned how to use their 'Painterly Blender' blender brush. All I had to do was lay down the flats, then scribbled in the shadows, blended, and voila! 4. Rather than drawing in the details of the jungle, I painted them in. I've also been looking at a lot of tutorials on how to draw creases on fabric to make the clothes look more realistic. as well as looking at how to make better, more dynamic lighting with rear lighting to make the figure POP! At the end of the day, a bunch of small changes all put together make a big effect.

This looks like a very different painting/rendering style from your usual stuff to me. Were you doing something different?
