Yes. In my speculation: The double meaning for Maximus (in addition to the practical benefit) is that it also grounds him. A personal tradition; he's so experienced and knowledgeable about farming and it can connect to where he is and, by extension, what he needs to do here and now.

It's is something that we do to dry the oil in our hands and to give a person a better grip so that whatever is being held doesn't slip in our hands. I did this ever since I was a child when batting in baseball because I did not wear batting gloves. Gymnast use chalk powder for the same reason. Glad you loved the movie!
