If you want to check out a good series about the Revolutionary War period, you should watch "Turn: Washington's Spies". It focuses on the development of Washington's intelligence network during the war and the tradecraft that was used to gather intel about the enemy's movements. Very character-driven series, and you will quickly become invested in it!

Military tactics at the time were still a carryover from medieval times where infantry would line up in ranks and fire volleys of rounds at the enemy's lines, only now it wasn't arrows but lead projectiles. As advanced as gunpowder was, the musket was not a very accurate weapon because it was smooth-bored instead of "rifled" (spiral grooves machined into the barrel that imparted spin on the projectile as it was fired to increase accuracy). The limitation of the musket also contributed to the persistence of infantry tactics of firing in ranks and shooting volleys. They would need to stand close together so that the volley would be concentrated. One bullet might not likely hit a target, but a rank of muskets shooting volleys into an enemy's lines would tend to create gaps in their line and create a weak spot for them to exploit.
Now, rifled muskets did exist, but they weren't generally available en mass for armies, but it would not be uncommon for individuals to possess a rifled musket for hunting. This is probably what Benjamin Martin and his boys had since they would have been adept hunters, which is why they were able to shoot so accurately at the British soldiers during the scene of Gabriel's rescue.
By the time of the American Civil War, the musket and projectile it fired had advanced to the point where it had become more accurate and more lethal, but the tactics remained the same. This is one reason why the casualties in the Civil War were so high.
