missing my red shower (preview)

In my last or penultimate other life, when I had that beautiful apartment in Barcelona, the bathroom in my guest room had one of those terrible plastic box showers that is uncomfortable and looks old and skanky already after only a few uses. So I decided to let build a new one.

That was a bigger task than I thought.

I am used - from Switzerland - that tiling is made perfectly: all tiles are placed regularly with the same small gap between each of them. But this is Spain. I have seen a lot of very poor tiling everywhere and so I asked the contractor (I had several renovation work to do at that time and he was responsible to sub-contract the different workers) if he knows a tiler who knows how to do it, which he affirmed.

But the result was unacceptable and the poor worker had to destroy it's recent work again and start from scratch.

One of the differences between Switzerland and Spain is that Switzerland is a country of specialists and professionals, while in Spain you can consider yourself an electrician, for example, if your grandfather used to change the power plugs himself and you watched how he was doing it...

While to change a bathroom in Switzerland there would be some persons who tear off the old stuff, some bricklayer who build the new wall and finally a tiler for the tiling, here all that work was done by one single person and for being a "multi-talent tinkerer" he didn't do it too bad - but not good enough for the professional price I paid. He was a very nice and friendly older man and I was really very sorry to see him having to destroy his work, but I just couldn't accept it.

Finally the contractor came to the conclusion that he wouldn't find a tiler capable to do the work as perfect as the price was... and he decided to cover the walls with silestone - in principle much more expensive than tiles, but much easier to install.

In the end a had a beautiful, perfect silestone-shower for the price of a simple tiled one.
