Laughing instead of crying…

Hey, Twindividuals!

So America is doing pretty good right now, right?

Just like most of you I am not in the best place mentally/emotionally with the state of my country. And I need some TV shows/movies that hopefully will make me smile and laugh and let go of this existential dread I’ve been carrying in my chest. And I imagine a lot of you need the same thing!

So in the comment section below let’s just put our go-to comfort TV shows and movies and maybe we’ll find some new ones together and get through the day or even the next four years.

I’ll go ahead and throw Thelma and Taskmaster on the list in honor of Drew.

Thoughts and prayers,

Grant

I forgot Agatha All Along on Disney+ (I know I'm basic) and Mythic Quest

Kevin Dunn

These looks great, I'm gonna add this to my watchlist. Thanks!

Kevin Dunn

Heartstoppers on Netflix, Taylor Tomlinson (talks a lot of religious trauma), Jerrod Carmichael, and Nick Offerman Comedy Specials, I know the guys probably disagree with my last one but Shrinking on Apple TV+ makes me feel less alone.

Kevin Dunn

I highly recommend Shetland and Vera. Love me some 1995 Pride and Prejudice. All Creatures Great and Small is so lovely and idyllic.

Jenny and Heather

West Wing is the best but it depresses the shit out of me now because of the stark contrast to the douchecanoe in the White House

Jenny and Heather

New Girl is on in my house all the time as background when we are doing chores ... my husband will crack up even though he acts like he's too highbrow for such nonsense!!

Jenny and Heather

I LOVE STaGed

Jenny and Heather

Jury Duty was absolutely fab

Jenny and Heather

I have been finding a lot of calm in the Over the Garden Wall Soundtrack and, when I have time, the series. It's a beautiful one.

Please don't destroy: The treasure of foggy mountain is a funny watch if anyone needs a break from all the things

Murder at the end of the world on hulu/disney+ sucked me in. It's one season, murder mystery. Highly recommend. And thanks to everyone for being awesome. I feel way less alone knowing that I'm not the only one s t r u g g l i n g with all of the terrible things happening.

Molly

- Wellington Paranormal on MAX - NZ mockumentary - brilliantly stupid - Psych - Shetland - Vera - +1 on all Taskmasters (I know Drew hates the NZ one but season 4 has some really wacky players) - Whitstable Pearl is really good, too.

treevis

If you can get dropout.tv then Gastronauts, which is a crazy cooking completion, is super fun.

Xingcat

You already love Righteous Gemstones, or else I’d say that… The Santa Clarita Diet is great! Traitors US on Peacock is also fun!

Grant

Great Pottery Throwdown is awesome! I love when Keith gets choked up

Carrie Tobey

-Buffy the Vampire Slayer -English Teacher Probably less laughs/smiles but these below are comforts to me -Sense8 -Person of Interest -Misfits -Orphan Black

Nico

I forgot about cougar Town. That was hilarious!

Elizabeth Sweet Masters

The George Burns and Gracie Allen show always cheers me up!! Also any of the big fat quiz from channel 4.

Elizabeth Sweet Masters

For any fans of Taskmaster - Alex Horne, Tim Key, & Mark Watson have a web series called ‘No More Jockeys’ that you might try. It is essentially the three of them on Zoom playing an extremely pedantic celebrity/word/memory game in various states of drunk and sober silliness. I only understood a tiny fraction of the references but it’s still a lot of fun if you like improv and want to learn a new game to torture your friends with. (They never really explicitly explain the rules (which also evolve over time) so definitely start at the beginning. And the runners are half the fun. - Mert)

Your Friend Bunbury

Bob's Burgers and Animal Control on Hulu Reservation Dogs, also on Hulu And great news! Fourth season of Righteous Gemstones comes back in March. It's the final season boooooo

Carrie Tobey

Some current and historical shows I've enjoyed while wanting to shut out the rest of the world: Trailer Park Boys Pushing Daisies Ted Lasso Mythic Quest What We Do In The Shadows Parks & Recreation Game Changer Make Some Noise Dungeons and Drag Queens Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fargo (TV Series) The Haunting of Hill House True Detective American Horror Story The West Wing Firefly Big Big 'thank you' to the rest of the community for all of the suggestions! As someone currently stuck in bed, I am grateful for this help to pass the time. <3

I love the British/original series Ghosts (on Max), The Great Pottery Throwdown, the Smosh channels have been bringing me comfort lately, too!

Jury Duty. It’s about a real guy thinking he’s on a reality show about jury duty but everyone is an actor. He does not know that everyone is an actor until the very last episode. It has James Marsden playing a hyper realized version of himself. I’ve rewatched a dozen times. It has a character who is mad he has to do jury duty because he was supposed to go on vacation with his girlfriend without a chaperone. There’s a HILARIOUS “soaking” scene with James Marsden being the person who jumps on the bed. It. Is. The. Funniest. Show. I’ve. Seen. In. A. Long. Time. I think it is on Amazon prime I think. You can watch clips on YouTube.

My go-to’s are RPDR and any musical. I also haven’t watched the news since the election which has helped tremendously with my mental health. I have no control over what’s happening so I do things that bring me joy. I hear about the news from others and I don’t plan to watch any news company for the next 3 years 362 days. Also….keep in mind there’s going to be a day when we will wake up to his obituary.

Amanda Rubin

Umm I’m going semi-old school movies, Die Hard, Die Hard two and Die hard three. Then The Bird Cage. I will never not love Nathan Lane doing John Wayne’s walk. For something a little different: YouTubers Movie Bitches. They recommended IMHO and that’s how I got here. I love their reviews of shows and movies. For shows: anime: Lucky Star, Nichijou, Science Fell in love and tried to prove it, Poco’s Udon World, School babysitters.

Penelope Pineapple

Taskmaster is amazing. Start at the beginning.

Penelope Pineapple

when things are bad I usually play the mass effect trilogy, or play old resident evil ps1 games, Avatar the last airbender is a comfort show, I highly suggest Flavor of love season 1-3.

Andy B (;

I always recommend The Venture Bros, the first season is a little hard to watch because of the animation but stick with it, it's jawsome

Saint.Gummo

Showing my age here buuuutt... My all-time, go-to movie for a good laugh is Clue. It is silly and campy and stupid and has one of THE best comedic casts EVER! What We Do In The Shadows...both the original movie and the TV series are pretty great. And give me ALL The Traitors...US, UK, New Zealand, Australia. It's deliciously wicked reality show drama and shadiness! I've never watched Taskmaster but y'all talk about it a lot. Should I watch it? Is there a particular season I should start with or just go from the beginning?

Bob's Burgers, The Good Place, Schitt's Creek, Is It Cake, Futurama (old seasons), Love Is Blind (I watch and try to guess what each person's childhood trauma is...is that bad?)

Nena Theis

LOVE Midsomer Murders. Murder wrapped up and tidy, the British way.

I revoked IT Crowd and Black Books, these are Graham Linehan productions and he should not get any more money from anyone ever. (edited for typos)

Other Chauncey

I came here to say Make Some Noise and Game Changer on Dropout. It's another streamer, but it is so worth the money for the sanity. The other thing I'd recommend on there that's drag-related is Dungeons and Drag Queens season 2 is airing now! Bob the Drag Queen, Jujubee, Monet x Change, and Alaska play epic DnD with incredible DM Brennan Lee Mulligan ❤️ Drag Queen fantasy storytelling has been a lovely escape lately.

Rachel D

Kath & Kim Still Game Rosemary & Thyme Midsomer Murders All these are UK or Australian so I can patch over any plot holes by being distracted by accents and other cultural norms.

Other Chauncey

AP bio is a sleeper hit, it's on netflix.

I think a lot of these have been said, but: - The Other Two - Hacks - Derry Girls - Abbott Elementary - Girls 5Eva - Insecure - The Infinite Review YouTube channel (for gamers, and people who like funny Irish people) - Alexis P. Bevels fan edits

Journey Apan

I recently rewatched the movie 13 Going On 30 in honor of my 30th birthday and it was so healing ✨

Minister Val

Somebody Somewhere for sure.

Maxwell Holder

Somebody Somewhere Bobs Burgers (1-7) IMHO and Trixie’s YouTube

Jenna

100% Taskmaster. Definitely Brooklyn 99. GLOW is fun. Staged is great for anyone who likes Good Omens. Amelie is a great comfort movie and also The Thin Man. The new season of Yellowjackets ( S3 trailer dropped yesterday) starts in a few weeks, so it’s time to rewatch the other seasons. It’s not exactly comforting but its nineties/naughties nostalgia~p*rn casting is unparalleled. And it’s gay.

Your Friend Bunbury

Fun and brain numbing but also sorta stimulating? Pop Culture Jeopardy! It’s a fun time tbh and there’s 3 eps a week so plenty to catch up on!

The Good Place Ghosts (US version) Central Park (Apple TV) ❤️

Futurama and bobs burgers are always playing in our house. And I usually watch Jackie Brown on my really bad days. Helps me feel like I could right wrongs by doing crime. 💚

I know you’re not tapped into drag race but try drag race Philippines season 3! It’s insanely good! My favorite movie is Scream so trust I’ve been watching that and rewatching my favorite IMHO episodes. Also did you see the priest talking at trump during the inauguration because that made me think of you Grant!

Vincent

TV: Derry Girls, Taskmaster, RPDR (of course) and lately the Traitors! Movies (recently): Dinner in America, Hundreds of Beavers, and Thelma. Also Bottoms 👑

Alex B Tanned

New season of Taskmaster coming soon, that's something to look forward to!

AddiVF

Bobs Burgers is always my go to show to zone out and forget the world.

Kielbasa

Hello Grant. I hope you feel better. As an outsider looking into the USA, I can understand your dread. Big Canadian Hugs. In terms of shows to watch, an underrated show I really like is COUGAR TOWN. Take care of you. Take time off. Enjoy the sun. Stay off the internet ;)

Aulivier Gagnon-Bélanger

Righteous Gemstones! Unless that's too real right now lol but I love me some Judy Gemstone

Alex Harris

I've seen all of New Girl over a dozen times and I don't know why I love it so much but I try not to think about it

Jose

Arrested Development, Brooklyn 99, and 30 Rock have all been recent rewatches of mine and I 10/10 recommend them all.

Lynn Blake

Abbot elementary has been my go to this month !!

Will

Sending love💖 highly recommend Game Changer and Make Some Noise on dropout if you haven’t watched either yet, Game Changer in particular gets compared to Taskmaster a lot

Charlie Tractor

As a fellow elder Millennial, the answer has to be 30 Rock and Community

Sean

I would say the west wing but hbo took it off max or whatever.
