Dev Blog 25 | Jel's Cafe | Dropping the Game Jam

Hey everyone, sorry for no blog post last week, I was prepping for my game jam project "DNA Subject Lucy" and as I'll go over today, I ended up cancelling the project, I'll go into detail about that first before talking more on Jel's Cafe.

DNA SUBJECT: LUCY

This is a game I made for a game jam last year, as part of the rules if no further development is made on the game then you are fully allowed to continue working on it for future Jams. I had all sorts of ideas for returning to this project but also some complications on the game flow and certain changes that wouldn't fit the current style of the game. Whilst I still want to make this game eventually, right now I will be postboning it and will instead maybe look at a remake/reboot in the future, the version of the game that exists now will simply be the "Game Jam" version if that makes sense.

Whilst I barely made much progress I did make some small adjustments, and I'm considering uploading them into the game as a minor patch, though I'm still not 100% yet. It included a new sub world to the Ocean area (a caves section), a new unfinished Docks area, and lastly some minor tweaks to Lucy's sprites and some internal code changes. Nothing major sadly.

Whilst I am upset I don't have the groove to work on this, this does mean I can return to fully focusing on Jel's Cafe once again, and I already began some more work.

JEL'S CAFE PROGRESS

As posted in the discord server, Jenny was given her finished copyright free redesign, she is now an elf! And her old story of not being able to perform magic but being a huge science nerd will remain, it is totally just an appearance change for her.

I also continued work on some of Bliss's sprites too, she now has levels 0 - 6 completed, with only 2 more remaining. Making her art wise the most completed character.

Samantha:

Anyone who has played the current build may know that Samantha is the most unfinished character in the game right now, and this is because I was unsure how far in development I would go with her. As of writing I am planning on possibly cutting Samantha from the game and replacing her with a new character instead. The reasons being is I can't really figure out what I really want with her characer, and the aspects that I do have planned for her is a bit too similar to Hannah.

Samantha will remain unfinished in the game for the time being until she is likely replaced by someone new. This doesn't mean she won't even return, but just for now will likely take a back seat.

This is everything for now, I've been ill for the past few days so work has slowed down, and I'm still recovering a bit too. Once I'm fully back to health I will resume development!
