What I Learned Speaking with Pimps and Prostitutes

Diving into this world of prostitution, there are a few things that blew my mind.

1. 100% of the woman's income goes to pimp

At first glance I wonder how this is even possible.  How does a woman risk her safety and sacrifice her mental health all just to give ALL the money to a pimp?  But it makes sense once you think about it.  If this woman walked around with thousands of dollars on her, she would be robbed nonstop, so likely her only option is to have a pimp that she can somewhat trust will be fair with the distribution of her income.  And if he isn’t, she likely leaves to find a better pimp.

2. Black Pimps & Prostitutes don't want Black Customers

I heard this from pimps and prostitutes both in Chicago and Los Angeles.  This apparently is for 2 main reasons.  The first is that the average Black customer is far too dangerous to risk doing business with.  The prostitute has had enough experiences of getting robbed, beaten, or raped by Black customers that her business model discriminates against Black clients.  The second reason is prostitutes say Black clients are much more likely to ask for discounts or renegotiate the deal once they’ve finished.  If they bought a 30 minute sex for $100 and they blow their load in 15 minutes, they want $50 bucks back.

Hearing all of this was something I was surprised to learn.

What were your biggest takeaways from the Pimps & Prostitutes of Los Angeles?  I’m curious to hear your thoughts.

I grew up in Rhode Island and a lot of people don't realize that prostitution was legal there until 2008.

I thought it was crazy to see that this was just a normal line of work for people in their family as well. Like hearing that one girl say that her mom also was a prostitute and that she just did what her mom did because it's what she knew is a crazy thought.
