IMPORTANT!

Patreon now offers a new billing option. We can bill you on the day you join and the same date monthly (instead of charging first day of each month). I'm thinking of changing to that, as it seems a bit more fair.

However, due to our somewhat erratic upload schedule, it's possible for a patron to miss out on a bonus video. If we upload one early last month and upload late this month, there may be a 32 day gap in between uploads.

In practice, either method shouldn't change much. In fact, nothing will change for existing patrons. But if you have any thoughts about this, please let me know!

You can learn more about this new option here.

WEEKLY UPDATE

Hope you enjoy our video on Jackie Chan's recent movies. This video took a month an a half to prepare, and it ballooned into a two parter. I'm tempted to make it a three parter, because The Foreigner deserves its own video. But I think I'll just briefly cover it in our next video, and do an analysis on it at a later date. I'm all burnt out on Jackie, and I'm pretty sure you do, too.

Come back tomorrow as we'll finally decide which martial art star we'll cover next! Remember to cast your vote!

Up next, I'm not sure if we'll do a Halloween special. I was thinking of doing a video on Audition. But I might shift to horror movies outside of East and Southeast Asia. I have heard great things about a certain semi-recent Indian horror movie. Might take a look.

Finally, I think the live action sequel to Whisper of the Heart is finally coming out this month. I'm going to hate watch it. Will let you know if I survive later.

MEDIA TALK

Continuing our talk about movies with quiet and slow moments, there are also another type of quietness. I'm talking about the quietness that you can talk over.

These are the movies that even when there are songs and dances, when people are talking, when actions are being performed, it feels quiet and laidback. They are films you don't have to pay close attention to.

My go to examples of this is Robin Hood: Man in Tights, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Airplane!, and Princess Bride. These movies have long stretches of slow adventure, punctuated by individual moments of iconic jokes and fun actions, and you can talk over most of the movie, and still get a lot out of it.

Man of the classic 90s rental hits are also like that. From classics like Robocop, to cult classics like Timecop, to shocks like Street Fighter. If I'm watching this movie with a friend, we are going to riff it on the spot and have a good time doing it.

It's a very different sort of movie going experience, much less pretentious, if you will, and a lot more casual. It puts the emphasis more on the community aspect of cinema, and the movie is just an excuse to hang out. Even if I'm watching the Michael Bay Transformers movies, I'll still have a good time watching it this way.

I think this is why there are so many movie reaction videos and so many of them are popular. Many of us crave watching movies with friends and just talk over it, to share that communal experience, to feel connected.

When was the last time you watch a movie like this? Let me know!

In any case, I'll see you in the next update!

Personally, I prefer the first of the month billing, cleaner on the card. Also, as Abraham said above, if the billing fees take a chunk out of the creators take then that's no good either. :)

I prefer being billed at the start of the month, as if you get billed on the go: 1) IS more difficult to gauge your monthly spending 2) you get charged extra billing fees if you support small patreons (<2$) as you dont get the advantage of grouping all the small payments in one single transaction. They tried to do this years ago and had to back down as outrage for the extra fees hurt their (and their creators) bottom line. That said, if they fixed (2) i may not like It but wont bother me. If not, Will be a repeat of what happened last time.
