[Weekly Update] Oct 30, 2022

Happy Halloween! Are you going to watch a horror movie tonight? I think I'm going to rewatch The Thing.

It's always a good time to rewatch The Thing.

CHANNEL UPDATE

Hope you enjoy our last video recommending 3 movies from 3 different countries. It was meant to be a smaller video, giving me more time to prepare for our Jet Li retrospective. But I ended up watching 7 horror movies just to pick out 3, and it took some time.

Fun fact, I almost wanted to talk about Ravenous, a Quebec film. The only reason it caught my attention is because my acting teacher has a prominent role in it. And she has a shotgun.

Other horror movies that I didn't include are:

Anyway, work on the Jet Li video has begun. Hopefully I can get it out in two weeks!

WEEKLY UPDATE

We talked about this briefly on our Discord server: Aging action stars.

After doing two videos on Jackie Chan's recent career, I've come to a sobering career and realize that most action stars actually age fairly well, contrary to popular belief.

Sure, all these action stars drop off in relevancy after their prime. But that's true to almost all actors. You don't see people talk about Mark Hamill being a "has been", even though he's only famous for voice roles after Star Wars.

I think the actor with a career that age the best is Stallone. Man is clearly passionate about movies, and he made some truly stunning works post-2000s. For me, his new career began with the excellent Rocky Balboa, a film he wrote and directed, in which he plays the aging Rocky trying to get one more chance to fight on stage. It's a touching and honest story, paralleling Sly's real world struggle for relevancy.

Sly has went on to appear in Creed, which is also fantastic. He made Escape Plan, finally having Arnold starring alongside him. These two have pretty decent chemistry together. Although I'm not the biggest fan of The Expendables, the series is definitely successful. It also stars Jet Li!

Speaking of Jet Li, dude's pretty much semi-retired after Fearless and The Warlords. He's just living his life, now. That's not really a career go downhill, that's just calling it quit when you are winning.

JCVD never really has that big of a career, let's be honest. His movies are rental hits back in his prime, and he's pretty much doing the exact something these days: Making direct to video movies, and many of them, while not great, makes money.

That said, JCVD, the 2008 movie, is freaking fantastic.

Arnold went into politics. He became the governor of California. Love him or hate him, dude's career is way bigger than just a film star.

Really, the only two action stars with crappy aging career is Bruce Willis and Steven Seagal. And now we know why Willis isn't doing so hot. Seagal is just a... I'm going to say it... He's a fraud.

Putting things into perspective like this really shows how well most of them are doing. I think we just love these action stars so much, we don't want their career to come to an end. And we project our negative feelings towards their career. But all good things must come to an end eventually.

Anyway, that's the update for this week! Time to dive head first into the world of Jet Li.

Oh and bonus video will be out tomorrow!
