[Weekly Update] November 20th, 2022

We shot a martial arts film early summer, and it took us this long to finish a rough cut. My ambition to make every YouTube video as good as possible has eaten into my personal time a lot. I think that's the source of my burn out.

Still, I appreciate your support and enjoyed doing YouTube way more than most other jobs I've done. Thank you for making this possible!

CHANNEL UPDATE

Our next video on Chinese wen movies is currently being edited. It should be on schedule! Check out our community tab on YouTube for some recommendations!

Our next video will be our 100th video, and I'm currently working on a behind the scenes video on how I write and edit video essays. So far it's going well, but there's always the chance that the video ended up too dry and boring, and I have to shelf it. We'll see.

Afterward, we have a video on the Train to Busan franchise. Specifically, its prequel "Seoul Station" and sequel "Peninsula". Spoilers: Both suck.

It'll be a nice change of pace, since we haven't talk about Korean films in a while.

MEDIA TALK

It's only a matter of time before we get a Vtuber movie/tv show. The only question is if it'll be Hololive first or Vshojo first.

Okay, I'm not gonna nerd out about Vtubers here for people who aren't interested. But this train of thought did lead me to an interesting topic: Now that superhero movies are no longer the dominant fad, what other new genre will rise and take its place instead?

I wonder how much Everything Everywhere All at Once will affect the American film industry, especially on the mid budget range. This maximalist, whacky, self-referential multiverse movie seems to be a pretty big trend, with not one but two Spider-Man movies doing a similar thing, as well as the entire MCU leading towards it. It's one more way to cling onto our dying nostalgia, I suppose. But I don't know how much this trend can last. I don't want nostalgia anymore, I want a better future.

Avatar once changed the industry by re-introducing 3D into the mix. And now that Avatar 2 is coming out, will it change things again? Will it be like Terminator 2? Or will it be like Duke Nukem Forever?

One thing I hope from the Avatar movies is to lean into that Solarpunk art movement. While I haven't seen it, Black Panther 2 also infused a lot of its Afro-futurism with solarpunk aesthetic. With the art (and political movement) gaining more momentum, this could be the new future.

Hopefully it also means a new and good Star Trek series but we all know that's kinda a big ask.

Anyway, it really does feel like the end of an era this year. Looking at the list of movies and they all instantly feel dated. The Batman, Thor Love and Thunder, Top Gun, Morbius, The Gray Man, Moonfall, Massive Talent, Sonic 2. They all look and sound like movies that belongs to a few years ago, not this year.

Hopefully,  something new will come along and blow our mind soon.

Video up in a few days, see you soon!

Sorry to hear about you feeling brunt out. Please take care of yourself. Also, the insight that this years movies all feel like they are from the past struck a chord with me. I hadn’t thought about it till you wrote it but yeah. Even though I enjoyed them, it certainly didn’t challenge me the way Everything Everywhere did.
