[Weekly Update] December 5th, 2022

It's snowing outside. Mariah Carey took over the grocery stores again. It's the holiday season. Hope you are having a great December!

CHANNEL UPDATE

New video is being edited but progress is slow. Hopefully I can still get it out on time. It'll be a behind the scenes style video in which I explain the process of making a video essays. Having to capture a lot of extra footage is why the editing is slower than usual. But it's also a pretty fun to let loose, not having to analyze anything and just crack jokes left and right.

We don't have a Christmas video planned, as I ran out of Christmas movies last year. The video planned after is about the Train to Busan prequel and sequel. So, if you have a holiday movie to recommend, let me know!

As a reminder, we'll be taking more breaks next year, with 4 videos planned for the first 3 months instead of the usual 6, as well as the month of May entirely off. Patreon will be paused on May and you will not be charged.

I'll also use the break to see if I can update the channel visual again. Last time we have a new look update was two years ago. I attempted an update early this year, but nothing came of it. Let's see if I can come up with something better!

MEDIA TALK

So, Cocaine Bear is a thing.

I can't tell you how happy I am that this seemingly dumb movie exist. Partly because, as you can see from our last video, I love stupid movies like this one. But more importantly, it feels new. It's made by Universal (not A24, surprisingly). It's a meme horror film. But unlike Escape Room, The Purge, and Fantasy Island, the premise of cocaine bear doesn't seem to exclusively and painfully aim at the gen-z audience.

It's also just a bold premise that gets your reaction and then your curiosity. It feels like a production that takes risk. It feels like a movie that I didn't know I want until it's announced.

I really hope it'll be good. But it's directed by Elizabeth Banks. I love Banks. But she has yet to prove herself as a capable director.

Anyway, absurd movie premises that you want to see. What do you have in mind?

I recently finished reading the most unholy of novels: Empress Theresa. It was an agonizingly entertaining ride, in which a woman is nuked not once but twice, accidentally caused the world to stop raining, fix the problem by blowing the North Pole. And that's only the first half.

I'm sad that I will never have enough money to make this book into a movie, or even a web series. In my opinion, this book deserve a movie deal way more than Ready Player One.

Other movie ideas I want to see: A remake of Space Mutiny. It'll probably have to be very low budget, since it'll be marketed exclusively towards MST3K fans. But I will not have it any other ways. The same goes to Robot Wars, or Yor: The Hunter From the Future.

And before you say remake Manos the Hands of Fate... that movie has multiple sequels.

We are currently living in some difficult times. Canadians are struggling to live as prices for everything sore while wage remains stagnant. Similar to how comedy become quite popular in the 1930s during the Great Depression, we may need more absurdist humor to help us face the future.

Rubber looks like a great movie to revisit. I wonder if it has gotten better over time. Demolition Man certainly did. That movie started off pretty absurd, but these days it looks positively sane.

Anyway, that's the update for this week. Hopefully I can see you in a few days with a new video!
