[Weekly Update] Movie I Missed Out On

Happy 2023! Let's hope this will be a good year!

CHANNEL UPDATE

Work on our next video has begun. It'll be about Seoul Station and Peninsula, the two other movies in the Train to Busan series.

This will be the only video this month, as I'll be taking some time off to take breaks, as well as prepare for a guest lecture, and finish editing the short film we filmed last summer. It's a new year, but a lot of old works still need to be worked on.

If you are a CalArt student, come by on Jan 20th, 1PM PST! The event will be fully remote, on Zoom.

Since I finally got a blu-ray copy of I Love Maria, I think I'll highlight that video for February. It's one of the most incredible Hong Kong sci-fi cheese you have never seen. I guarantee it.

MEDIA TALK

Looking back, I missed out on a lot of movies in 2022. This was the busiest year for our channel, and most of the time, I only watch movies for work. Then again, 2022 isn't the most exciting year for mainstream cinema.

But hey, sometimes you have to acknowledge your limit. Here are some of the movies I'm interested in, but haven't seen:

Glass Onion: I didn't watch it because I don't like Rian Johnson movies. I don't like The Last Jedi. I don't like Looper.

But Glass Onion is one of the only movies in 2022 that comes close to having a fandom discussion on social media. People who watched it actually wants to talk about it, share about it. That alone makes me want to know what's going on.

The fact that it confused a certain right-wing pundit is just the cherry on top.

The Whale: I have always been a big Brendan Fraser fan. I enjoy the Mummy movies a lot (except the third one). I LOVED blast from the past and his Canadian French. I think he is an excellent actor and a charming individual.

The only reason I haven't seen The Whale? It's not out in Canada.

The Banshees of Inisherin: This movie creeps up on me, and I didn't even noticed. It quickly became a favourite of many of my film friends and colleagues, before I even know it existed. I know nothing about what it is, except the title and that Colin Farrell is in it. And I'm going to jump into this film completely in the dark.

Gotta say, I have yet to see a bad Colin Farrell performance. Even in that janky Total Recall remake, he is great.

Black Panther 2: While I initially wasn't interested in the movie due to Marvel and Disney fatigue, Ryan Coogler is still enough of a name to have me turned my head. He has yet to make a bad feature film, which is quite something.

And then the trailer came out, and it looks pretty fantastic.

Warriors of Future: Can't say I'm actually excited to watch this, more so I feel obligated to follow it. It is one of the biggest movie to come out of China this year (although China wasn't producing much lately), and I don't even know if the movie is supposed to be good or bad.

The poster looks pretty bad, though. But maybe it'll surprise me like Wandering Earth.

Sunshine of My Life: Now here is a Chinese movie I actually want to see. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I find Chinese tearjerkers (like Hi, Mom) to be one of the most consistent genre.

There are still enough money to be tossed around in the industry, that once in a while, a director will get a chance to write and direct a deeply personal project. The result is usually really good. This is, from what I heard, one of those.

And that is the update for this week. Have you seen any of these movies? What's your thought on them? Hope you have a great 2023! I'll see you soon with a new video.

Comments

I too don't care for Looper and TLJ but I've really enjoyed the Knives Out franchise so far. If you're gonna watch Glass Onion, watch it now. The pandemic is still fresh enough in our minds for act 1 to make sense, and Elon Musk has just turned himself into the perfect real-life counterpart to Edward Norton's character so the parody lands well. I feel like this movie is going to make zero sense in 5 years time, which is a shame because Knives Out felt so timeless. Btw thanks for reminding me of Decision to Leave in your Top Movies of 2022 list on social media. Totally missed it during the year but watched it yesterday! WOW what a film, I especially loved the editing.

I also love every movie Rian Johnson has made (except I haven't seen Glass Onion yet).

J. Francis

oh man, I need to hear why you don't like Rian Johnson movies. I love everything he's made, from Brick, The Brothers Bloom - even his 2003 short "The Psychology of Dream Analysis" was so good! But I get everyone has different tastes, so I wonder what you don't like about him! Also The Banshees of Inisherin has to be Martin McDonagh's best work. It's like In Bruges, but all grown up!
