[Weekly Update] There's a Birdemic 3

Sorry for the late update! Been busy for the past 2 days.

CHANNEL UPDATE

Hope you enjoy our last video on Crazy Rich Asians and Mahjong. It's a bit of a different video than our usual fair, but I had a lot of fun going into the story and reconstructing the game. If you know any other game scenes that you want me to analyze, let me know!

For the record, YouTube Channel Lord Ravenscraft already did a video on the Go scene in Knives Out. Check it out!

Next up: Comparing the non Donnie Yen kung fu movies. Currently still debating if I should focus on the characterization of Ip Man, or the martial arts. It's difficult because ultimately, all of the movies I've watched are either just okay (The Legend Is Born), or isn't really about Ip Man anyway (The Grand Master).

In any case, the bonus video should be up in a few days!

MEDIA TALK

Did you know there's a Birdemic 3?

It's no secret that I have a thing for bad movies. I enjoy and even praised the works of Neil Breen, and did videos on multiple famously bad movies.

And if you are like me, you'd also agree that bad movies are better than forgettable average movies.

But not all bad movies are equal. Some bad movie enthusiasts hate the Sharknado series, because the filmmakers are in on the joke.

I, on the other hand, am okay with them. Being intentionally bad is a different kind of enjoyment. It's like a dad telling lame jokes: he is in on it; the joke is bad. But it's still funny. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is a bad movie, and certainly not one for everyone. But I think many would still agree that it has its merits.

LAZY bad movies, however, is way worse.

When James Nguyen first made Birdemic over a decade ago, there was a debate on wether or not he's making it bad on purpose. I was and still am on the camp that he didn't set out to make it bad. It takes a special level of talent to create something so authentically awful. And the fact that he has Hitchcockian cameos in his movies speaks to his ambition as a filmmaker.

But then, as far as I know, Birdemic became popular and made money. And so, he made another one, and now, a third one. All of plots, characters, and even the mistakes are recycled from the first one. He is now producing a product.

Mind you, it's likely a product that no one wants: He attempted to crowd fund this movie on 2 separate platforms and raised less than 1000 dollars combined.

That, to me, is what makes him so much less likeable than Neil Breen. At least Breen doesn't make sequels. Breen movies are consistently getting grander. His filmmaking technique, although still awful, are also improving in his own way.

Yes, Breen is in on the joke now, but he keeps finding new jokes to tell!

James Nguyen just recycles the same junk over and over, hoping to make some money. That's just said.

Then again, he made movies! All I made was short films, so what do I know. In this economy, it's difficult to blame anyone doing anything out of financial anxieties.

Anyway, that's the update this week! New video should be up sometime next week. I'll see you with another update before that!

All I can think is that Nguyen has his fingers crossed that Mystery Science Theater or Rifftrax will riff Birdemic 3 and he can make some money that way…. I don’t see it happening. I agree with you that it is likely an attempt to make money rather than a noble attempt to solve global warming…
