[Weekly Update] Cocaine Bear is surprisingly disappointing.

I beat Persona 3.

I didn't like it.

I blame it on how truncated the "Portable" version is.

CHANNEL UPDATE:

As stated in previous updates, we'll take the rest of March off, in order to prepare for a few things:

I finally came up with an April Fool's video idea. Expect a video on April 1st!

I'm also updating the Patreon video to a much shorter and snappier one. It's currently being edited.

There are other personal projects I'll be working on, including the much delayed martial arts short film we made last summer.

Finally, I've acquired a blu-ray copy of the live-action version of Whisper of the Heart. Reviews were not kind to the film, and I don't expect myself to be, either. Gonna give it a look and report back!

Finally, for this month's bonus video: How about the Truman Show? If you have a request, let me know!

MEDIA TALK:

So I watched Cocaine Bear... It wasn't bad, but it was nowhere near as insane as the title implies itself to be.

The story is exactly what you expect. A group of people, for various purposes, head to a national park, where a cocained-up bear is going on a killing spree.

It's a comedically violent film, similar to slasher movies of the 90s. For this reason, vast majority of the film, including the kills, happen in broad daylight, which is very much appreciated. The bear effect is actually really good, although the compositing is sometimes wonky.

The main disappointment I have with the film is that, despite being half the title, the cocaine aspect is not explored at all. I was expecting some over the top, tripping-balls hallucination sequence from the bear's point-of-view. However, we don't even get to see humans doing cocaine. I mean, we see one scene of it, and the cocaine has literally no affect on the character. It is very much just a "bear on a rampage" movie.

Still, the film does have some good humor. I especially love the opening, in which the film shows some factoids about bears, before showing "source: wikipedia", which gets a good chuckle out of me.

The characters also have funny lines, but they aren't very interesting, so the joke doesn't always land.

I guess my disappointment ultimate came from the fact that I wanted a movie about the horror of cocaine, which is a new idea, but ended up getting a horror movie about a bear, which is just another creature feature I've seen a million times. Heck, I watched more creative creature movies by doing a video on Chinese shlockbusters. Now that is a real shame.

Still, this is a silly enough movie to be watching with a friend while sharing a beer. I don't love it. I don't hate it. It's not even forgettable. It's just... alright.

The search for movies that doesn't feel outdated instantly continues. Let's hope 2023 get better!

Anyway, see you on the next update!
