[Weekly Update] The Memecraft Movie

Oh my god! He remembers to update!

CHANNEL UPDATE

Next Video Change:
So, I finished most of the script for a video on Media Literacy, and it's awful. Turns out, spending first 5 minutes of the video explaining the Shannon-Weaver model of communication isn't all that interesting, even if I try my best to do some wisecrack. It's just too academically oriented, and feels like a lecture. So, I have to shelve the video.

Maggie Cheung Video:
Luckily, after a whole year of on and off rewrite, I'm finally close to finishing the Maggie retrospective video. In this video, we'll take a look at 3 different movies, offer insights into three different eras of her career. And we'll take a look at one thing only: How she walks. It's going to be a fun examination on the difficulties of acting. Even the most basic action, one which you never noticed as a casual audience, has a lot of thought behind it.

Summer Horror Video:
Work on the community voted video has begun, and I'm starting off with some unexpected housekeeping: Trying to find a blu-ray or HD source of these films! Luckily we decided to stick to the more well known films, so it's not that hard. But since they are not big international hits, it's not like they are readily available either. Hopefully I don't have to break the bank on this one.

MEDIA TALK

Minecraft is the future of cinema.

You may not like it, but us old farts are never known to like new trends anyway.

Alright, let me explain. Think about it, why do you watch movies in theaters, when you can watch them at home? The same reason you go to a concert when you can listen to music on Spotify: It's an event you can be with your friends. Think about the last few big cinematic events. They can be loosely divided into 2 categories. You have Sinners, Oppenheimer, Dune 2. These are big cinematic experiences.

And then you have Barbie, Venom, Sonic, Megan. And what are they? Memes, they are memes. No, the title of this update is not a typo.

In the age of TikTok brainrot, the fastest way to get the movie going crowd to notice you is to become a meme: Crazy eye-catching visuals, sarcastic funny plot, and hilarious moments you have to see to believe. From Megan doing the stupid tiktok dance to Jack Black going "I am STEEEEVE", these clips are made to be cut into the trailer, and then get cut out to be put onto TikTok. And it seems to be working.

These meme movies heavily incentivize communal viewing, as much as TikTok is meant to be shared. I mean, how can you watch Megan do that stupid dance and not have someone to talk about it after? For the well adjusted, you can talk about it with friends after. For the terminal online, you talk about it on TikTok for clout. Either way, you have to be there, and laugh with the audience.

In a way, Minecraft is a massive gamble. From minute one, this is a movie made to be bullied. It can either become a movie everyone wants to laugh it, or a movie that whoever watched will get bullied in school. Lucky for it, it ends up being the former. Unlucky for theater workers everywhere, they are the ones who have to clean up the theater after. Kids from all over, tossing popcorn and junks at the screen. It is indeed, an event cinema. Except, it is tinge by the ragebait culture of today.

So, do I like this trend? If my sarcasm isn't enough of a hint, I'm indifferent of the film, and not a fan of the audience behavior.

But I honestly don't blame the kids: TikTok is all they know! It's not like there are widely available spaces for them to play. Malls are dead. Skateparks are dismentled. Amusement parks are prohibitedly expensive. Where are they supposed to go other than online?

In the end, it's all a money problem. Adults and kids don't have enough money to go around, so culture is limited to an online space. It's sad, really.

Oh well, at least comedy is making a comeback, amiright?

Anyway, I'll see you in our next video!

For the DVD and BluRay, check out the library first! It's not guaranteed, but I am always surprised by what movies they do have.
