[Episode] Kwaidan: Beauty in Horror

It's quite a daunting task to be reviewing this film. it is a 3 hour long classic, made by a legendary director. I tried my best to stay focus and only show you how and why this movie is beautiful, but we can only scratch the surface in 15 minutes.

Anyway, this is a slow film that needs to be enjoyed with patience. So, if you are having a Halloween party, this may not be the best choice. But if you are having a quiet night on your own, then Kwaidan is an excellent choice. Give it a watch, and Happy Halloween!

For those not too experienced with Japanese films, The Snow Woman is played by Keiko Kishi, who went on to star in a lot of prominent films and has a unique look with her hookish nose and sharp features. She's still alive, too! (Er... Oct 24, 2025--she's 93 now!)

I still regularly rewatch the "mock kabuki" scenes of 耳な保一 (Earless Hoichi--I probably mis-wrote the Japanese). The film inspired me, later in life, to visit Shimonoseki and the Dan-No-Ura setting (hilariously, I'm not absolutely certain the seashore footage is actually at Shimonoseki! Granted, the area is so built up (probably even in the 1960s) that would be difficult to shoot. I realize the actual "acting" took place in the aircraft hanger set.
