"Hamburg Steak" Process and Commentary

Starting with a sketch. Rough, no detail on the plate, didn't even know what it was going to be at that point lol. It's currently some kind of leafy vegetable and Skye doesn't really like it.

Drawing lines over the sketch. At this point I knew it was going to be a hamburg steak and Skye was going to be sad about it not being a real hamburger.

Adding flat colors for Skye, as well as coloring the lines themselves. I wanted the colors to reflect that Skye was inside a somewhat dimly lit restaurant.

Adding shading and highlights. Tried a more angular look for the hair highlights. I think it turned out ok.

Drawing the rest of the food. I realize this is very "draw the rest of the owl" but I didn't have any snapshots to post for this step. I looked at lots of pictures of hamburg steak and experimented around for a bit til the food looked like food. I'm actually pretty happy with how it came out. I've never really drawn a beef patty this detailed before, but it seems like the way to make it look good is using pixel "clusters" to show the texture of it. I'm hoping to draw a lot more food in the future.

Adding some wood texture to the table - I've had a hard time drawing wood tables in the past but they look pretty good here. I just used a flat tan color with a darker grain color looping through it. Maybe simple is best... lol...

Moved the composition up to show the entire plate, fiddled with colors to add more contrast, added a simple background (and yeah it's the same restaurant she's always at :P), and made it clear why Skye was looking confused with a little thought bubble. And then I called this done.
