Friday Rambles and Game Dev Update 2025-01-24

It's the Friday Rambles.

Life Stuff

Wherein I gush about Obsidian

Well, one day, while I was writing notes as I did for over ten years in Microsoft OneNote, an incredibly annoying Copilot icon appeared when I made a new line. As if it wanted me to AI generate my own notes. What?

And so, looking into ways to disable it, I went into my Microsoft account, where I find that they very helpfully upgraded the price of my Office subscription to $30 more a year to pay for Copilot. And so, feeling stupid that I paid for an Office subscription in the first place, I finally canceled it, and then I spent a day moving 10 years of personal notes to Obsidian. Obsidian, being a local-first Markdown file based notes app, means I'm no longer trapped in Microsoft's ecosystem where I'm forced to pay for stupid AI features I don't want, while still probably feeding them training data with my private inner thoughts. Enough, Microsoft! No more!

And it also means that even if Obsidian becomes terrible, I can just take my text files elsewhere. Whatever!

I'd been vaguely aware of Obsidian before this, and tried using it a few times before going back to OneNote, but this time I was actually motivated. At first the file navigation UI was all stupid, not letting me sort my notes however I wanted and I was about ready to just give up again, but then I installed the Custom Sort plugin, which basically just lets you sort your notes, but to a ridiculous degree of specificity. Like, there's an entire scripting language. I wrote some regex to sort my folders and files exactly how I wanted. I fell in love.

I also installed a theme that makes the colors pretty, and then added custom CSS to add scanlines and make the letters glow like a CRT monitor. And added Tiger-chan in the outline view, because why not?? Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm a convert at this point (also because I don't want to spend another day migrating notes to something else again).

I wrote the rambles like this. I might turn off the scanlines later, because it's kinda straining my eyeballs.

Anyway, I can now tell why Obsidian has such a weird cult around it. It's like the foobar2000 of note apps.

Other Life Stuff

Okay, I'm finally done with the family vacation stuff from the past two weeks, which was a good time, but I'm antsy to get back to work. I did continue to draw every day, but I only have two doodles I can show. They were like, kind of those "no zero days" sort of things, done 10 seconds before I went to bed. I was really busy driving around to places, give me a break.

"Off Model Skye"

"Screaming Flower"

The rest of the arts I drew are for the game.

Otherwise, jogging, moisturizing, keeping myself distracted from real life, so on and so forth.

Merch Stuff

What merch stuff? Oh, another plushie in the works? Wow! Are you excited?!
More to come later!

Gamedev Stuff

Translations for the Overtime Update are well under way, and I'm still holding onto hope that we'll be done in February. I drew some more assets for the game, but I still have a lot to go. I'll be really ramping up the work during the next week, and I'm going to try to get another build out for the translators so we can do some proper LQA.

I'm still thinking about how to go about sequels. I'm wondering if I should do like, short Endless Monday holiday episodes, like a game about Blythe McScrooge getting visited by the three spirits of Christmas, or a Halloween game about Penny trying to find a good costume for the office Halloween party or whatever. They'd last like an hour or less and I'd sell em for cheaper than Dreams and Deadlines. Maybe I'll do that on itch.io and make them Pay What You Want or something. After I make enough I can put em in a collection for Steam. Just brainstorming.

The End

Ow this scanline filter is hurting my eyeballs. I'm going to turn it off. Anyway, I'll be busy actually working on the game this next week. Maybe I can even show off some nice screenshots featuring some new assets. Anyway, thanks for your support, as always. See you next week!

Comments

I meant to link it in the post itself. oops! I took it from the "80s Neon" theme (https://github.com/deathau/80s-Neon-for-Obsidian.md/blob/master/obsidian.css) and used the CRT parts as a custom css snippet. I disabled the animations though because they annihilate my laptop's cpu.

I hope it isn't too much to ask, but I'm curious about looking at that CRT css

T-Patch

Yeah, Obsidian is where I landed too, after Microsoft drove me insane with the constant "But OneDrive! Backup your stuff!", incessant AI nags, ads on my lock screen, forced changes to my task bar, and on and on. I went all in and switched to Linux just to make it all stop, and found Obsidian thereafter. Thank you for mentioning the custom sort plug-in. I never got around to looking into plug-ins, and strict alphabetical order is not always what notes need!
