STEP BY STEP - spider-man noir #2 cover

Hey, what's up, it's me, Dave. First of all, thank you so much for supporting me in this new venture, I'm super pumped about it and can't wait to see where this all takes me. With your support I'll finally get the opportunity to just invest in myself and in turn be able to give back to you. I wanted to start today by sharing a bit of my process, I don't often post this type of thing but here we are, hidden, behind the curtain so you can see everything I do before delivering the final product.  Also, this is a public post so that anyone wondering what this Patreon is all about can get a small taste, just a tiny itty bitty taste, just enough to drive em nuts and crave more. There's a very good chance this won't work. Good thing I have all of you who already supported me. Now, onto the meat -

For this cover the idea was pretty much all mine, the editor on the comic basically said that he wanted a complete 180 from the previous cover(a floating head montage), so I went with what I hoped would be something dynamic. The composition rests on an instant read from the viewer using large single colored shapes to keep the image as simple and identifiable as possible. I personally always loved that Spider-Man Noir was essentially Batman so I leaned on that pretty hard while adding the Indiana Jones vibe w/mean lookin Nazi's and all that.

The above is the basic process I go through on most pieces. All of the line work and the black and white shading is all done in Clip Studio. For colors/textures I usually move into Photoshop as it's a bit easier for me to do overall adjustments and keep it all balanced(in Clip I find I have to select a color and paint with it rather than doing mass color moves in PS, but I may just be less experienced with the program). After I have my colors all laid out exactly how I want them, I move from PS back into CS to then paint and finish the rest of the image. I paint in CS because I find that the brush engine suits my approach perfectly and feels very natural.

This image above is the thumbnail I submitted to Marvel for approval. I ended up ditching the skulls and other small elements. Instead, I went with more story centric pieces like the Nazi guys, the femme fatale and the fight scene on the bottom. Generally though, I'll put in compositional placeholders if the client isn't offering that up front to speed the process up on my end.

Anyway, hope that's helpful! More coming very soon, I'll put together a brush post for you all so you can get as much out of my process work as possible.

Thanks!

Dave

PS - let me know what else you'd like to see, I'm planning sketchbook posts, process videos, exclusive art things and as I start on new pieces I plan on taking you through my thought process and the steps along the way. Hope you have a great day!
