BEHIND THE SCENES - Robot Wars

Some of you may have seen the Terminator Dark Fate poster I put up a few months back, if not, you can check it out-

I wanted to share some of the initial roughs I did for the poster, these were all done just as loose ideas to show what direction we might end up going in for the final poster. Generally when I work like this my original direction for the poster becomes altered due to the amount of feedback necessary to get approval from just about everyone. Basically every actor on the poster, their agents, the director of the movie, the producers, my art director, and just about everyone you've ever met in your life(that's what it feels like anyway). It's a really crazy process and it's always a miracle that something comes out finished on the other side haha.

I definitely learned a lot working on this one, I made some very big mistakes on this as well. Since then I've altered my approach and now I'm getting much more successful results, but that's just how things go! One of the crazier things was how many times I painted each of their faces, I think the main 3 in the middle got repainted around 5-8 times each. Just multiple versions over and over. There's a big difference in how someone looks vs how they see themselves. It's a big lesson I've learned doing this stuff, you have to look at how they're presented in final edited form for things like ads or magazine shoots. If you paint how they actually look, it can be pretty unflattering. You need to play into their best qualities always even if you feel they're veering away from looking exactly like themselves.

I can definitely go into more detail on movie work if you're interested. Let me know what kind of questions you may have regarding anything involved!

I am always a bit saddened when I see how much top quality talent is not enough to save a movie from being a steaming pile of shit...

Man that's crazy fast!, it usually takes me a month to finish a piece lol

Using my current approach it would probably take me around 5-10 days depending on whether or not I hit any walls, but that's generally how long I spend on bigger images like this without any feedback. Just as an example, my Marvel stuff rarely has any feedback, so those take me 2-3 days each.

Thanks for sharing! If you would have gotten feedback on the spot how long do you think it would have taken you to complete from sketch to final? Just curious on the pixel dimensions for this one

It's a funny thing actually, most of the time me and the Art Director are in the heat of it together so we're both doing whatever we can to move it forward since we can't control the higher ups. It becomes the type of thing where we're both so desperate to get it through that they really won't get in my way at all haha. I'd say the actors are the hardest to get approval from although Arnold and Linda were by far the easiest to get approval which was a huge relief.

I want to know who has final say on the piece? Art Director after the actors approve of their face?

Devin

This is already quite insightful already. More of this or anything you want to post is hype by me!!

Definetly would love to know how you "plan" out the painting timewise, as in, do you make some iterations, then take a break, then come back to it? How do you pace ur big pieces like this one? I've watched ur Orc Realistic portrait tutorial a lot and that helped me so much on making more realistic portrait stuff, but I'm still very much a mess in pacing, I just end up pulling 3 all nighters and finishing the thing
