Gettin' Solid - adding the helicopter!

Hey!

Well, some progress comin along! I worked up the Mil Mi-24 helicopter into the composition. These kinds of things are always my least favorite to draw and work up. I've never been super comfortable drawing vehicles and all that, especially ones that are based in reality. Thankfully all that's left is the tank and then some environment bits and action lines and all that. Should come together pretty quickly once I get the tank sorted out, I'm really happy to get through the helicopter as I was definitely dreading that part.

Here's a short little gif of the process of the helicopter-

I was initially using some reference for the helicopter that I realized didn't line up with the actual model used in the game so I had to adjust it. But yeah, fairly straight forward approach, just refining my drawing and adding values painted on top. I can't wait to add color and texture to it all!

Thanks again for all your support, we're gettin real close to the end of this one.

Also, I'll be uploading the full res of this image once I'm done. I can't sell this outside of conventions if I ever even do one so I want you all to be able to do with the image what you like(as long as it's for personal use of course).

Hope you have a great night/day!

Dave

My initial sketch(not pictured in the gif, but shown in an earlier post) is all done from really light reference and mostly my imagination. When I'm in that phase I generally am drawing whatever I want without worrying too much about accuracy, it's more about placement in the composition. Once I had that I'll pull up a reference of the helicopter, start doing a tighter sketch on top of my previous comp sketch. Once that's complete I'll do another layer and a tighter line pass on top, again following a reference(the reference is never direct, I'm not copying an angle or anything, I'm looking at a bunch of general pictures and making up my own angle from observation/imagination). After that I add another layer on top of the tighter drawing and begin painting in values in grayscale until you see the final b&w image like I have painted above. I'm not one of those people that will just erase on a sketch and refine over and over, I always tend to make new layers for cleaner lines.

What’s the cleanup process like for you, going from your rough sketch to you cleaned line art? Are you sketching without reference during the rough phase then using it more in the clean up?

Joseph Kennedy

Damn amazing and generous with your art too.

So I tried doing greyscale first then color and you were right it works so much better. This was a revelation to me. So nice to be able to just narrow the focus of what you need to be aware of in each step.

Chris Miglorino

Was thinking of making a mousepad for myself with this piece. Would that be cool with you?

Crystyan Ortiz

Guess you'll have to find out :)

wondering how fast you'll get beaten for wearing shirt like this.
