Video - wolverine sped up process

Hey!

I recorded this tonight as a test for how I'd go about recording my process in the future. There were some small color errors caused by OBS(the screen recording program) so I'll have to adjust for that in future videos that are a bit longer. This is the same process I detailed in my post about the brush uses. But here's a repost of the steps -

Here's what my process generally looks like

- Sketch and Final Drawing in Clip Studio

- Save as PSD and open in Photoshop

- Set Final Lines on a Multiply Layer

- Paint in Colors and Textures beneath lines

- Use loads of Adjustment Layers to get the exact Colors and Values I'm looking for

- Save and bring back into Clip Studio

- Finish everything with Watercolor, Gouache and Pencil brush

- Final adjustments in Photoshop, sharpen, Done.

Also, here's the Wolverine, I spent about an hour on this one, I wanted to show how quickly things come together using this process. I'll of course go into more detail in another video and likely a YT live video.

Attached is the full res of the PSD with layers but because OBS messed up the colors some of the layers are just steps as single images rather than full layers.

Hope this helps, thanks again for all your support!

Dave

Incredible!

Hey Dave do you not have the original recording to upload? Doesn’t even need to have voiceover.

I'm using a wacom cintiq 32 pro, it's pretty great but really expensive, I hear that the new wacom 16" cintiqs are pretty good though. I don't experience much lag at all with these. I honestly think one of the best routes you can take is getting a new ipad, apple pencil and procreate(you can also get clip studio on there). It's likely the cheapest option to create the best work possible digitally without lag or any other weirdness that can come from a wacom

David Rapoza

What hardware are you using for drawing, any recommendations? I tried a wacom some years ago, but felt there was a slight lag with drawing and it showing up on screen

CrazyDescent

Hey Dave, just wanted to say that you're killing it with this Patreon, it's great to see your process and analyze the .psds, can't wait to try the clip studio brushes with what I usually draw! Thanks.

Thanks! It depends what you're referring to, if you mean my b&w comics then I generally use like a noise brush or I'll use the built in pantone dots or noise that come with Clip studio. If you download my latest PSD character concept portrait, one of the layers has a bunch of little dots for shading, that's all done using Clip's built in manga style noise stuff. If you're interested in that, please leave a question in the February Q&A post(pinned up top) and I'll go over it once I do the live video.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if they'd maintain their Japanese names but yes, that should be right, you can change the names in the program to make it easier for yourself. All I do for alterations on the brush is adjust the opacity, if I'm blending something softer I'll go for 10%-20%, if I'm going for more painterly look I'll do anywhere from 40%-70%, whatever feels right for the texture you're painting on the image(hair vs leather vs metal etc.). I blend a lot mostly by using the lower opacity and constantly using the eye dropper tool(alt on the keyboard) to select colors I've already laid down and blending between them and once blended I'll select whatever that new blended color is and blend again. I'm almost always using the eye dropper every second of that process. If this doesn't address the issue, please let me know!

Awesome stuff as always! I noticed you usually have a certain noisy fill that you add to your backgrounds or areas you want to shade quickly in some of your pieces, is that noisy fill a default in Clip or?

MarkWithAC

This is awesome! I can’t wait when you go into more detail in future vids. I’m particularly interested in the way you use the brushes/techniques themselves in CS. When I opened your brushes in clip (they had Japanese names btw, is that right?) they have so many adjustable options from opacity, anti-aliasing, stabilization and starting and ending size. Do you mess a lot with those or just opacity? When you shaded wolverine in CS, it almost looks like you were ‘blending’.. the grayscale with no blend tool, the reason i ask is bc when i was shading with the same watercolor brush it didn't naturally fade off to blend from dark to light, does that make sense? Sorry for the loads of questions! Keep up the amazing content!

Berserker barrage!

Thanks! I don't use any reference for poses like this because I've done them so many times. It's also because I've done multiple books and a bunch of comic stuff now that drawing characters in poses you're familiar with kinda gets drilled into your muscle memory over time. I think if you're not used to doing these poses then you should totally study them before just getting into it from memory.

I definitely think Clip's brush engine is much better at portraying accurate brush strokes. It feels(at least for me) how it feels when I'm working on watercolors traditionally. Procreate has a similar feel but I still prefer Clip, especially because Procreate doesn't offer a desktop version. I've been working for right around 14 years now and I think Clip is the closest I've come to feeling in total control of my process digitally, it's been very freeing for me.

David Rapoza

The brush engine is a lot more fluid and less wonky than Photoshop. I started using it myself about a year ago and it does feel different (in a good way). Also the UI is kind of similar so doesn't take a ton of effort to learn it. Def give it a try in my opinion!

Daniel Taylor

Just out of curiosity, what makes you use Clip studio for linework and photoshop for texturing? does clip studio have better, more fluid or more customizable brush engine? Or are there any other reasons for it? I never thought about using 2 separate software for specific stages of my illustrations, but perhaps there are some benefits to that :D

Thanks Dave, I'm getting super inspired

Damn I love how there is a magic point where all of a sudden those values pop

Also, u may want to try streamlabs obs for live sessions. It has built in chat box and other widgets. Standard Obs is good on its own anyway

ivan p

must investigate

ivan p

so what you are saying is that obs is pratically a psd rapist. how can it be

ivan p

It could be the obs issue corrupting the psd, not sure

David Rapoza

Wow 😳 one hour?! Wow Also... That desktop though, lol just kidding I am mess too.. Do use reference for the position of the head or just from repetition? I would be interested in the sketching/decision part. Thank you, this is becoming a treasure box

Mauro Franco

for some reason, the psd looks much more vibrant in my photoshop than on here. crazy
