Magic Style Illustration - part 1 - video w/full commentary

Hey!

Hope you've been well! Here's the first part of the Magic Style Illustration series I'm going to be putting together. In this video I walk you through how I come up with my ideas for Magic cards as well as my thoughts on composing an image for a small card and my design decisions when it comes to characters/monsters. This video is a bit different than my previous as I am doing commentary after I've already recorded the process, so I go a bit more in depth on my approach to illustration.

In the next video in this series I'll be talking through my process working in the final lines as well as(hopefully!) laying down the textured underpainting.

Thanks as always for your continued support!

Dave

Unfortunately, I can't download it.

HI Dave, I can't find the brush you indicate in photoshop to draw. I have already downloaded Greg's pack but it is not there. Can you please point me to the right one? Thank you very much! Thank you for your amazing work and for sharing it.

Santana

Hey Dave, Have you shared the brushed used for this project anywhere? Apologies if you have already and stated that somewhere. I'm new here and would love to give these brushes a go! Thanks, and keep up the amazing work!

I had never heard of the 'take one thing off before heading out" fashion rule before (or to think to apply that to adjustment layers) I'll definitely give it a try since I over think pieces.

Linda Marsh

Sorry, missed your question! I generally only submit 1, but when I started I likely submitted 2. I usually only submit the sketch I feel strongest about.

David Rapoza

maybe a silly question but how many sketches do you usually submit?

Joseph Weston

Generally it would be the sketch I did in the video previous to this one but with color, that'd be the submitted sketch usually

David Rapoza

just wondering how elaborate teh sketches you submit are compared to this one.

Joseph Weston

Any chance you could make examples of what you sent to a client like Wizards for your sketches? This looks awesome btw!!

Joseph Weston

You hit the nail on the head that it's only when you review the work, it's clear what you were doing. It's great that you offer these insights. Thank you...

Great stuff Dave... I'm a massive 'process' fan and have studied many different approaches across many different disciplines, from connecting, to writing and writing music to sculpting and they all follow the same pattern. Block it out fast, then build up slowly.

Daniel Potter

Love this, the commentary is great. I love the insight into the composition and sketching process. Is there any chance you could point out which of Greg Rutowski's brushes in that pack you used for your sketching? I really like the look of it but none of the brushes in his oil pack seem to work the same way. I can't get any of them to hold that nice, thin line you get

Martin Kirby-Jackson

That's just the way she goes

David Rapoza

Love it...but, dude, Dave...your voice puts me to sleep. Very mellow and soothing. Haha. *SMH*

AC

Fuck yes

Thanks for making this! I know itโ€™s a ton more work for you to do commentary vids, but I love this sort of shit and really appreciate it ๐Ÿค™
