Asuka - Evangelion - Underpainting

Hey!

Well, we're almost there with this one, it's ready to paint finally! I did a pretty thorough underpainting on this piece, I wanted to see if establishing so much of what was there in the original sketch(color wise) would help in the final painting - or just how much that may speed up my general process.

When I approached the Rei piece I went right into the colors without doing a very intensive sketch or even an underpainting like this. Most of what I did on that one was done as I went through the painting just working things up to a final painted look. I think because of that the Rei piece ended up looking a little stitched together - as in most of the pieces felt like they were separate and not really fitting into a planned composition. If you check it out here, I think it's pretty apparent that the composition feels less purposeful than the current Asuka composition.

Well, here's hoping this Asuka piece is the strongest of the bunch! Can't wait to have these all done.

Thanks as always for your support!

Dave

It may be because of the character, but it think this one's the most expressive, yet! I really like the posing, attitude and her expression on this one. Can't wait for the finished piece!

Yeah, I can definitely see that. I think the other ones had a bit more going on in the composition pulling up towards their bodies so I wanted to fill that space with something similar. But I think you're right in that as a trio it looks a little strange as they are not environmental objects.

Looks great! Can't wait to see it finished. Though not sure if I'm fan of two dudes in the background, since other two fanarts have only nature and red circle I'm feeling like it breaks consistency if all 3 are to be put next to each other. But on it's own it definitely looks great!
