The Basics - inking forms on forms on forms

Watch on YouTube - or - Download

Hey!

So, I wanted to touch on something slightly more complex in this video - building forms on top of forms when inking. I usually see comments when I ink something more detailed asking about or commenting on smaller details like veins or muscle sitting on a larger form and I thought I'd address how I approach these things simply.

Most of the time when I think through this process it's a matter of finding where the light is hitting these forms and then what the shape of these forms will be. Once I've figured that all out it's as simple(although it takes time) rendering the forms using the same wire mesh approach I talked about in the first Basics video. It make look daunting, but it really is just a matter of finding the shape of these forms and rendering using fine lines in order to add dimension to each of the shapes.

Please, if you have any questions, leave them below and I will do my best to address them - and if a question needs a more in depth answer I can find a way to share a bit more in a subsequent inking video.

Thanks as always for your support, I hope this was helpful!

Dave

PS - this is essentially how I think through all of my paintings as well - the only difference being I don't use a tiny tiny brush and instead opt for a larger brush initially to define the shape and values - after this I work to smaller and smaller brushes until I'm doing tiny details.

double PS - the inking brushes are attached to this post

Are you planning on coloring this and the Link art?

Your technique reminds me a lot of classical engraving or mezzotint a.k.a. a ball ache. Good luck finishing Ganon!

This was super insightful, thanks Dave! How many hours do you think you've sunk into this so far, and how many more do you think you have left? Kinda in line with the person above me, but a video on rendering different materials in this style would be much appreciated. That's something I struggle with personally-figuring out what should be rendered in the inking stage vs what should be done in colors / painting. Thanks!

Hey Dave, hope you're doing great. Thanks for this! I'm still absolutely loving the Basics series. Top quality info, for real. You did an older piece called Spooky Witch that has a vampire in shiny intricate armor. Would you consider making a tutorial on how to render that gold material? How do you make the metal look so realistic? Thanks as always for the awesome content πŸ‘
